Squash and pumpkins in Earthbox

Wilsonville, OR(Zone 8b)

Hi,

Has anyone growns summer and winter squash, pumpkins, in earthboxes?

The EB instructions say 6 squash plants per box, would this be for both summer and winter squash? It seems like a lot for such a small space, does it really work?

I would love any advice on growing squash, both summer and winter squash, in EBs.

Also, I would love to see photos of yours.

Hi,

Since I have not gotten a response on this here, I thought I'd let you all know that I got the following answer from the EarthBox forum:

The box will hold six but things become crowded above the cover. Blake, the EarthBox inventor and commercial farmer, has actually switched his thinking. He's recommending 4 squash plants now. We are in the process of updating the printed instructions as well as the downloadable instructions on the site. I'll post an announcement with the plant quantity changes.

I've only grown tomatoes & peppers in an EB, 2/box. I would use the same spacing for squash & pumpkins, but you might be able to fit 4, if you train them all off in different directions.

essentialplanet - thanks for posting the answer over here. I was worried that 6 wouldn't work! I think I'll take try to take the two middle ones out - if I can make myself!
