Very pretty Mamjack.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

just heard from richard........he says it's a cross between greggii and microphylla.............called jamensis. i knew this plant didn't look like any greggii i had ever seen. i told the nursery girl that but she just insisted it was a greggii. you know i just realized we have no salvia forum on daves. and this plant has prob. been around down south texas for awhile but i had never seen it before today.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Looks sort a kinda like a faded out Hot Lips! lol

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

no it does not. it is so pretty. at a distance it looks more like an agastache to me, esp. with these colors. but i just read it may be a short lived plant. also, that it may rot with damp cold. how disappointing. now i have to figure out how to improve the drainage for this beauty in hopes that i can keep it alive thru the winter.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

I think almost all salvias are good seeders. Collect that seed & it will give something else to start next January.
:~)

Mamajack, there is an agastache and salvia forum! : ) Btw, beautiful salvia.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

oooooooooooooooh!! i was looking under the "esses". lol.
linda, i had the hardest time trying to find seeds on my salvia last year. i could feel them but always i got them too early or too late. i did find some greggii seeds and a few annual varieties but never could get any farinacea or guaranitica seeds.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

hmmm...i do love the salvias... :) That is awfully pretty... :)

Melanie

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

txturquoise...........have yall not had this one down there at your nursery's?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm sure that my favorite nursery here, Rainbow Gardens probably has it or certainly will eventually. For all that I know, I myself may have one, lol...I have so many salvias and sages that I've lost count of them and most of their names, lol. I'm happily watching the arrival of the blooms on my Andean Silver Sage, with its black/black purple blossoms. :)

Melanie

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

oh i sowed some seeds of that one. don't think it's hardy here but figured i would either trade them or try to collect seeds. i planted about 20 different varieties of salvia but so far that one hasn't come up. and i wish i could visit your nursery. lol.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Believe it or not, my Andean Sage made it just fine thru the winter...even thru our terrible ice storm. It seems to be pretty tough...and quite happy in full afternoon sun. I've got some cuttings in small pots and hoping that they will take...since I want to spread it around some more in the rock garden. I love the color of the bloom...and my large plant is growing right next to my black & blue salvia and copper canyon daisys. Quite a nice color combo.... :)

Melanie

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i don't think my forsythia sage made it thru our winter and it's supposed to be hardy here. smockette says not to worry as it's a late riser but i am. lol.

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

what is Andeans sage?

here it is.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Cutting in the fall? Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeee?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol..thanks for posting that photo, mama...I was just about to.... :)

I'm still waiting to see if my cuttings will take....one looks pretty good...the other looks a bit wilty....I haven't seen any seed on the mother plant yet...but I reckon that I shouldn't deadhead the blooms quite so fast....

Melanie

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh yes, I had that one year. I can't remember for sure, but I decided not to keep it. I heard that it wasn't hardy here, so I kept it in a pot. It seems like it was too floppy for the area I was trying to fill and then it got left out when an early freeze hit and it froze. I liked the leaves though. That silver/green combination was very striking.

MamaJack, did you ever get your mango tree?

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Sylvia has a wedding to go to & I'm headed to my parents in Ft Worth, via Metro Maples in Mansfield.
I don't know what a strait line is! lol

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i am clueless what "metro maples" is? is that some sort of mass transit? lol.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Name of a company/nursery that grows Japanese Maples.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

hahahahaha shoulda known. well have fun. how many are you buying?

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

We grow them @ the Farm. I'm just looking.
Are you going to be around next wkend if I come back up?

barb
which coral were you speaking of?
the coral looking one that is blooming at this time is salvia x jamensis cv. pat vlasto that i got from richard some time ago
i noticed sierra san antonio did not come back this year ..and i lost dark dancer last year.. and that one was really something..i need to find that one again ( dark dancer )

pamsue

forgot to answer your ? ..which ones..umm ill have to check to see which ones survived the winter.and get the list to you....ill be planting seeds i collected last fall as soon as this weather warms up..and those will be open pollinated. i planted some 'alba' seed last fall and they are up a few inches now.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

pamsue............maybe you lost sierra s.a. because yall are so wet? that is what i read about this plant.........it has to have really good drainage. unless it can't take zone 8a cold. which do you think it was?

the coral that i was talking about was just plain greggii coral. but do you have that other jamenis.......pat vlasto? and i am not familiar with dark dancer. and how do you buy plants from richard?

when i planted this sierra s.a. i cut it way back. i did stick some of the cuttings in dirt but i don't really look for them to root. if it had stayed rainy they might have but it is about to get REAL hot here and i didn't have time or space for cuttings right now so just took a chance doing it that way.

i planted about 20 different salvia from seeds and most have germinated. they are still real tiny but if you are a salvia lover you may already have the ones i started. we will have to compare lists sometime. also, about 4-5 different agastaches have germinated. do you grow those?

SMOCKETTE.............yes i am home next weekend. i might even have some money then. lol. it is going to be a hard weekend for my daughter so if you are coming maybe we can meet up with you and dawn can come with her daughter. it is my kids dads birthday on sat. and from april 19 - may 19 every year my daughter grieves.

hi barb
it could be drainage..the soil settles after a few years..i got some sand this time around for some of my plants
the salvia jamensis pat vlasto is the one i am going to make cuttings off of this year..
i just was at walmart and i saw salvia greggii hot lips ....it was in a big container ..i havent seen that one like that before. is that one new? i havent kept up with the cultivars the last few years.

richard goes to shows...i think he has a schedule on his site.

pamsue

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i don't know how long hot lips has been around but i got my plant last year. it is so cool in the spring........very noticeable. i like 'em loud and raucous. lol. there are a few other microphylla's that i want. so many plants.

what seeds are you going to start of the salvia? i just gotta know. lol.

hi barb
i will be starting seeds of the ones i collected last fall from my own collection of salvia greggiis and the like...when it warms up ...also i did get some in trades and some in purchases..im pretty sure i mixed up the seeds of all the seeds i collected last year except i kept the maraschino separate

ill get a list to you of what i have when i get a chance

it would be great to expand the plant collection by trading cuttings as some seem to be hard to come by

pam

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

well when these seedlings get some size on them i will let you know what grew. it is about to get hot here so i may lose them all. i really wanted to get them done earlier but just couldn't do it. now which is the maraschino..........is it a greggii? and i above all want the other one you mentioned. lol.

salvia greggii x microphylla maraschino..theres a pic in the plantfiles

i will get some cuttings started when it warms up..it hasnt warmed up much at all yet
so maybe we can trade in the fall

pam
