When to repot the AV's (they have a neck)

Eagle, ID

Hi,

My AV's have a "neck" but are in bloom. If I re-pot now will the blooms die?

No, your blooms should still be intact. Just don't water them with cold water like I did the first time I repotted a AV in bloom..lol

Be gentle & don't go up in pot size much or distirb the rootball. They do like to be pot bound to bloom.

Good luck,

rustswoman, I normally remove the blossoms when re-potting. If you can't bear to do this, I suppose you can wait till the flowers fade, remove them, and then re-pot.

You say your plant has a neck. When ready to re-pot, remove the corresponding amount of length of the neck from the rootball. If the neck is 1" then remove at least an inch from the rootball by slicing it off.

You can see now why I said I remove the blossoms so the plant can recover quickly and use it's energies for new roots. Some growers don't bother to remove the blossoms and they report it works just fine. I am of the opinion that it is less stressful to the plant if the blossoms are removed or re-potted when not in bloom.

Here is a link to a good article on re-potting.
