It's been so busy around here I haven't had time to keep up but here is the latest scoop.

After seeing how much the "big chickies" liked it outside last weekend I decided to move them to the coop. It was a hard choice since the nights are still cold and the days are varying. I moved them out Monday night and they are doing great. I no longer spend half the night tip toeing thru the dark to walk up the chicken ramp to peek thru the window to see what they are doing.....lol.

The coop is finished except for painting the outside trim, I do want to add some insulation in the ceiling atleast sometime this spring/summer and I still have to cover the other half of the chicken yard with something (the other half I have strung fishing line but ran out and had to buy more)

The chicks are loving it in the coop !!!! I have a heat light and a red light hanging inside for added warmth. The lights are secured I double checked that before anybody went out =0) They have much more room to stretch and flap and run. They now get a morning and evening visit from me calling them to come get treats and they are already adjusting to that after the initial scatter....lol.

They have not been allowed into the chicken yard yet as I want them to have the time to learn more they need to come back when treats are brought out to be put up at night. Besides which I want the rest of the yard covered so they aren't easily picked off from above!!! The temps are only 60ish this weekend so it's still on the cool side.

My cacklehatchery order arrived on Wed. 3-runner ducks (one was dead on arrival) but the other two are doing great !!! They do this little butt wiggle thing that is sooooooooooo cute. I know I need to post pics and will get some better shots this weekend.... I hope. I have to work and it's my daughter's prom tonight so today is pretty much spoken for.

The turkeys were a nice surprise. I was really starting to fret about all I had read about turkeys. I was concerned they would not eat or drink as I have read they are sort of dumb and spend a lot of time looking up. The suggestion was to put them with chicks so the movement draws their attention downward. So at the time I placed the order I added 5-buff orpingtons to the order to be sure I had small chicks to be with the turkeys...lol.

The turkeys have been eating and drinking great and actually will run right at my hands when I put them in the brooder box. They will jump on my hands looking for food. I put all this order (except for the ducks) in with my 9-hatched out chicks from the week before. At first my hatched chicks were not pleased and faced the corner but they got over it quickly...lol.

There were 8 turkeys in this order

3 bourbon red
2 royal palm
2 large white turkey
1 narragansett turkey

On the first night one of the white turkeys cried / peeped loudly for a very long time. The kids wanted to do anything to shut it up. Finally I picked it up and held it for a good while stroking it's head and it's been content ever since, go figure. The turkeys look a lot like the chicks except they have a small wart like knot above their beaks.

Oh yeah and I have blue laced red wyandotte eggs due to hatch on Monday. Silkies and some Blue and Black standard cochins due to hatch on Tuesday. Blue and Black orpingtons due to hatch on Wed. It's going to be a busy week !!!

This is a bad pic, the red light makes it hard to see the ducklings but I will post better shots soon.

I think it's possible you might have an addiction to birds. LOL I think we need some pictures of your coop and set up!

We had ours outside for a bit yesterday too. OMG! Those little things sure can run fast! We put them out in a big plastic baby pen so I could clean out there indoor coop. We let them pick at the ground and run up and down the gravel drive. They had a fabulous time fighting over dandelions. I thought one had found a worm but it was a pink dandelion stem. LOL

I have a local farmer coming to till me up a big garden and I plan to build a chicken tractor that I can move around the garden to slowly expand it and also have the waste products close to where I need them. Eventually I want the rabbits and chickens permanently houses close to the garden.

The ducks are growing fast. Got some cute pics the other night with them laying in the grass with my daughter and the cats...lol Will try to post them after I get home.

I've got lots and lots of silkie babies, haven't done an official head count but it was a great hatch. Excited about the colors too, will take pics. Although I will be placing some of them in new homes because I already know I have more silkies than I will have room for...lol.

I got some light and some dark BLRW, five I think. Will have to look again at my notes. They don't all hatch at the same time so you move this one to a brooder box and come back to the incubator or the hatcher and bam then you've got 2 or 3 more silkies coming out then back to another blue lace....

Cochins were trying to hatch when I left the house for work this morning. I've got orpingtons due too. But only a few eggs of each 4-5 so I won't be over-run with them. My duck eggs are due to hatch next week.

I promise to post pics.

Well that was the end of this hatch

21 silkies
5 blue lace red wyandottes
4 standard black cochins
1 black orpington

I lost some chicks that tried to hatch from the narrow end of the shell. I know I had humidity issues after the silkies started to hatch, it just skyrocketed. I did speak to the breeder I got the silkies and the cochins from via e-mail. She told me on the larger birds like the cochins and she said she had just hatched out some blrw that she keeps her humidity at 55 instead of 60-65. Said she has less troubles that way.

So I have made a notation and plan to try that the next time I hatch . I have some frizzle eggs I bought in the bator now but they appear for the most part to be duds. On day 10 most have candled clear which is disappointing. I also have a few gold laced wyandottes in the bator now and did see 3 that showed movement.

I hope to take pics of the "Ideal" chicks and the coop this weekend. I have almost finished stringing the fishing line across the top...lol. I started too late last night and the bugs were trying to eat me alive. I had sat in the coop doorway visiting with the chicks and talking to them for a good while after I got home from work last night. It was relaxing....lol.

The ducks will have to progress to a "larger" water bowl as they spread it all about too quickly. My son says it looks like they are having seizures when they dip their bills into the water to drink the way they shudder and shake.

Jab91864,
A friend of mine has some ducks and was wanting to know how long do they sit on their eggs for and she said they are sitting on them for over 3 weeks is this noramal????

Northern Michigan, MI(Zone 5a)

Ducks are 28 days in general I believe. Muscovies are 35 days I think.

So yes they do take longer than chickens. Your friend should do a google search on duck info for her breed.
