I had to google to see about this. There are all kinds of posts out there from taking care of them to a vegan lifestyle to recipes. Poor chickens!

Well, we don't plan on eating ours either. Eating the eggs is a whole other thing!

Wellll. I eat mine. I cannot have ten roosters brutalizing my hens, and I'd rather do it myself knowing my birds had a good life than eat chickens raised indoors and then squashed into a truck.

I just think I'm too big of a wimp Zeppy. LOL I know my kids would have no part of it...

I hear ya. Mine don't like it either (and I hate butchering) but I think it's important to know that something has to die for us to eat it. Doesn't just grow there in the supermarket for our enjoyment! Just another opinion.

That is something we are all learning more about as we bought a small farm and are learning little by little, one animal at a time, more about farming and raising animals. The hardest lesson is why we can't keep "pet" cows and pigs. LOL

Little by little's the best way to do it, I think.

Ive been reading!!! I love my Chickens and other animals as "Pets" too! I know that LIvestock isnt supposed to be meant as family but it is hard not to think that way! Im afraid that we become this attached too often! On the other hand , it does make us caring and responsible , for the welfare of all our animals! I would much rather be atached to my animals and know that they have been raised safely and humanely. I know that we will all one day see the fact that "Store Bought", animal products just might not be the safest thing for us! As a matter of fact we do see it more and more everyday! So if the necessity ever came, we know that we can provide our families with safe Food , if need be! I grew up watching my Grandma, raise her Chickens with all the love and care, that one human can give ! I also watched her choose the perfect hen for Sunday dinner, or the best old tough Rooster for the Dumplin' pot! I t was just the matter of fact way of life! She would cull out the ones that didnt produce or the weakest, or the oldest! this insured her Chicken family a long and more productive life! And of course eggs were eaten everyday, but the best from the best were left to hatch . Life goes on and the old way, was the best way! Grandma only supplemented her free range birds(Chickens , turkeys and Guinneas ) with dry corn that she shelled out to them every morning!
We loved Grandmas birds and Grandpas cows and Pigs. We were taught how to care for them. We were also taught that they gave us the gift of their lives when nescessary, to keep us fed and in some cases warm and clothed! We even had small chairs with Goat skin hide as the seats!
No , I didnt live on the Prarie with Laura and the rest of the Ingles, but I did come up in the last of an era that made people very self sufficient. One that dissappeared with all the 24 hour groceries and fast food joints and eat all you want restaurants!
Im not trying to preach or do the soap box thing , but I am saying, WE need to look at the way the world is and look at what we are really eating and go back to the reality of We are what we eat! And if that means being a little over the edge about what our animals are doing and how they do it , Well I m Guilty!
Sorry!!! I guess my right foot was on a soapbox! E.

so i guess Hallmark will be comming out with a card next yr ? lol :)
