I just planted some cilantro in a pot and it's getting full sun. My basil, thyme, and sage planted in the same manner are THRIVING (that basil grows an inch a day, I swear) but the cilantro is getting yellowy and basically looks sickly. What am I doing wrong? Too much sun? Too much water?
All suggestions appreciated!
Cilantro getting pale
Cilantro likes cooler spring or fall weather. Basil loves summer.
Hmmm... interesting. Should I shelter it on the porch a little more? Bring it inside for the summer?
I grow lettuce etc in a greenhouse with evaporative cooler in the summer. Some plants are day sensitive which means they can't be tricked y being inside or in the shade. I have very little luck with cilantro or spinach. Arugula and many others will grow as long as it doesn't get too hot.
I agree on the Cilantro not liking heat- mine bolts to seed as soon as the soil warms up, and it can't be tricked no matter what I do! I sow my seeds in the fall and enjoy it all winter thru Spring-
Oh, thank you for all the information!! I will try and baby it through the summer and see if it'll do well for me in the fall / winter.
We grow cilantro amongst the tomatoes; as the weather heats up, the mater plants keep the cilantro cool and shaded. I do this with most of my cool-loving herbs and greens: lettuce w/ cukes & peas, etc.
I finally managed to grow some in a pot on the SE-facing kitchen windowsill. I think if I took it outside it would already be too hot.
Summer's here, down here. sigh.
wombat not sure what part of Texas your in but don't think extra care will cut it...I've tried it all....cilantro is a fickle wench in our heat for the summer. If you can bring it in the house it MIGHT live.
But don't count on it. The one on my windowsill is looking pretty puny now. I moved it to a sill that gets less sun and cut it back, but I don't hold out much hope. I'll sow again in the fall and see what happens. :(
