Does anyone know which daffodils would do ok in Tucson AZ?
daffodils in Tucson AZ
Most narcissus need a winter chill period to properly develop the buds. I don't know anything about Phoenix specifically, but in general Tazetta and Jonquilla type narcissus tend to do better in warm climates. One that has done well for my parents, who live in Florida, is 'Avalanche' http://www.brentandbeckysbulbs.com/spring/productview/index.php?sku=01-0801 - it returns reliably each year while even the jonquillas will eventually fade away there. If you are looking for a classic yellow daffodil, try 'Gigantic Star' http://www.brentandbeckysbulbs.com/spring/productview/index.php?sku=01-0215 which has also done well for them. If it's dry you will have to keep them watered during the winter and spring while they are growing. After May when the foliage dies back they won't mind being hot and dry.
Make sure you don't plant them next to a structure, if planted out in the open they have a better chance of chilling. I had some for years in a spot and they came back every year, was getting to be a wonderful clump, then I had to move them for some reason and I put them next to the house.....mistake! They dwindled until finally dying out all together. Mine were box store special, you know- 25 or 50 in a big ole bag?
