Gail: Looks just like mine. I think it is described as blue, but mine blooms more of a purple color. Maybe it's just considered in the blue family of colors?!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

wow, I am loving this show of plants.....I need about 9 months to start wheeling and dealing with trading leaves....isn't this the most fun you have ever had???? it is so me!!! I am getting ready to conserve on space and start these leaves, not in solo cups, but in a 22 " tray.....from there into a 72 cell insert....from there into a 11/2" pot....can't wait to try this approach...not going to use perma nest ( they are too expensive)....just going to use the flimsy ones to start with and then move to the same tray (sterilized of course) with the 72 cell insert.
I read this on one of the links supplied in the stickys...maybe was written by Snowrose????

Love everyone's post.....you are right, Lin. plus my camera never shows exactly what the true colors are sometimes....
Yours look great as do byndenweedBeth...

U.P., MI(Zone 5a)

ooOoHH aaAaaH, I am in awe they are all beautiful and my want list is getting longer.
Please keep them coming...

Sue

I have my first blooms on a Chirita species. This one hasn't been named yet, so it still has its collection number, USBRG 98-083. The flowers are on wiry stems and shoot out to the side.... Not a show-stopper but I am liking it a lot. Above everything, it's a very drought-tolerant one, and that is a very good thing in my book. It looks like there are a couple more spikes forming, and each spike looks like it will bloom sequentially.

here's a closeup of chirita 98-083

This is a species Streptocarpus from S Africa. It is supposed to be one of the driest growing of the genus, but I'm finding that it needs a lot of water this season. It's also supposed to be heat tolerant. I'm growing it with a lot more light than most of my gesneriads and it seems to be happier now.

The flowers are tiny (the photo is deceiving). It's one of the parents of Gator's Tail, and some other hybrids with narrow leaves.

Key ... those are just lovely! You have the healthiest plants .... Great Growing!

I have 8 Chirita's ... I'm new to them, but just fell in love when I saw photo's on Rob's Violet's Website about 6 months ago! I had never heard of Chirita's before! My 'Diane Marie' has two bloom stalks on it and C. 'Kazu' has a little bloom just popping up! I am loving Chirita's as much as, if not more than the AV's!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Am I addicted to DG?? I am sitting at my daughter's house admiring the chirita.....I ordered one called 'Aiko' I believe.....it has the same kind of foliage, Keyring as your first photo. So far, I can't make mine bloom ....yours are outstanding (as usual).....
gail
PS..my daughter's screen makes me want a new one.....the colors are so true and clear on this screen!!

Homosassa, FL(Zone 9a)

keyring i have 2 chirita, one named keiko its got 6 funny looking things comeing out from the bottom where the second row of leaves starts. now is this the flowers, these are curveing all around but not going upward.

the other one is kazu now it has the same thing but looks a lot different at the end of them there like a v, tryed to take picture but to blurry

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

Those might be flower spikes.... lol. I don't notice spikes until I see color - I'd never notice anything like that. lol. And I'm pretty much a newbie with Chiritas too - generally my growing area is too hot for them (well into the 90s in summer) so I've not had much luck.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I didn't even know we could grow them in a hot area....mine are all in the house under gro-lights.

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

most don't do well in the heat. The 98-083 and tamiana are two that don't seem to mind. I also have a few others but none of them are happy.....

(Zone 1)

I don't have mine under the grow lights, but on the top shelf of a plant stand in an East facing window. I keep the blinds tilted when the early morning sun is coming in ... I figured it would be too much direct sun ... as soon as the sun has risen higher I open the blinds all the way and they get very bright light all day in that window. I remembered someone saying they didn't like it real hot, so I thought it would be way too hot putting them under the grow lights. They seem to like the location on the top shelf with the natural light from the window! I can't wait for them all to begin blooming! I am really loving the Chirita's ... less work than AV's in my opinion!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

thanks for telling me this....will move the chiritas to an east window!!
Mine have not bloomed....maybe they really don't like those hot gro-lights!!

U.P., MI(Zone 5a)

I have a couple more bloomers to show! These are plants I bought from ebay. I was very pleased with them :)

Burgundy rain

Enjoy,
Sue

I always have to laugh when I look at these pictures because I always see white spots on my leaves and I freak out thinking I have mealy bugs but when I go check it's just perlite!!! Whew! :)

I love african violets and have many. However I know nothing about them. ( Except that I need to water them from the bottom and not get the leaves wet. My grandmother taught me that. ) All of mine are no names. I pick them up here and there, where ever I see one I like. I do have a question. I had a white one that started to grow many plants in one pot so I divided them up and put them in seperate pots. I ended up with 4 plants. However, instead of blooming white, they all bloomed purple. Why is that? Any idea's? Thanks. Here is a picture of some of mine.

You must know something as those are beautiful......My unidentified African violets bloom differently each time they bloom.........I don't know why, but someone will come along tomorrow and tell you why....

Silver Spring, MD

They all take my breath away. My violets didn't do well this winter. The house was cold. Well, that's my excuse. I think neglect is more truthful.

U.P., MI(Zone 5a)

Staceysmom those are gorgeous! Do you fertilize them? They really look healthy. I want to know your secret :)

Sue
