Selling Lamb?

southeast, NE

Not sure if this is a good site for this. I think I have my husband talked into direct sales of lamb. We live near Lincoln which has a high eastern culture population. Yesterday I even drove past a neighborhood type small eastern grocery store. We have friends who sell live hogs directly to their customer and take to the butcher for them as the butcher is not USDA certified to sell meat. He is inspected/certified to butcher meat but not to sell meat. Does that make sense? So what I am thinking is that I place a few ads in the grocery store, in my work breakroom, etc. and see what kind of interest I have. I would think we should sell live per pound price and have people pay us for the animal and pay the butcher for the cutting. Any other suggestions? Anyone else do something like this? I am just tired of relying on the unpredictable markets.

Im not a lamb grower, but that suggestion would more than likely be your best bet! That would protect you from any govenment policies against selling unregulated food products! We just heard of a gentleman that sells organic milk and got arrested because it was unpastuerized! He now has to sell his milk as Pet grade food! So if a person buys it , he may do as he sees fit with the milk ! Which protects the seller of the milk!
