My 10 yo dd's 9 month old kitty is pretty sick. For the last few days, she wouldn't let anyone near her and if you did manage to get near her and pick her up she would hiss and growl. She's normally a very affectionate cat.
Anyway, yesterday morning (6am) she wanted outside (both of our kitties are inside/outside) so I let her out. Normally, she wants back in after about an hour, but she never came back.
Fast forward to dinnertime, my DD let Angus (our mastiff puppy) outside to do his deed and she spotted Bitsy sitting near the van in the driveway...next thing I know, the front door is flying open, my DD is hysterical, screaming that Bitsy has "green stuff and blood coming out of her". OMG.
After playing Wild Kingdom and trapping her in a box in DH's workshop, I managed to take a look at her. She had what appeared to be a quarter sized wound on her side, with stinky gunk oozing out of it. I told DH that I didn't think anything attacked her, because I would have noticed that the other day when I picked her up and it appeared to be infected...nothing that could have happened since 6am.
Luckily, our vet has late hours on Wednesdays and I took her over. Turns out that she had an abcess that "exploded" for lack of a better term. It's really quite nasty looking, you can see her muscles. BLECH. She has an antibiotic ointment that I have to apply to the wound itself...which is much larger than a quarter, seeing the area around it shaved and an oral, liquid antibiotic. She is locked in the crate that Angus normally sleeps in (it's LARGE) so that the 2 dogs and 1 other cat won't bother her. She's been sleeping pretty much constantly since last evening. Poor baby. Vet said that
the abcess was most likely brought on by a bite or scratch from another animal. No wonder she hissed when she was picked up.
This pic is a few months ago, but she's not much bigger. She's a really small cat.
