All of my Orchid Cactus are setting buds, this Red was the first to bloom, I had to share.

Red Starting to Bloom
Gorgeous flower, Betty. Congrats!
Where are you growing your epis?
GH
This one has been in the GH all winter. I just moved it outside. It is hanging in my shade room to get adjusted to the sun. After it flowers it will move to a big pine tree where it will hang all summer. There it will get filtered sun all day.
I have several more OC that are setting buds and will be blooming in the next few weeks. My favorite is the Ric Rac. It got sunburned last summer and the plant is really pitiful looking but is going to do its blooming thing just a little later than usual.
Betty
Thank you Gingerrose, I love your red and pink. My RicRac is still a ways from bloom time. Here is a link to photos I posted last year when it bloomed. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/603066/

Picabo, I enjoyed the picture of the epi at the top of the thread. Your link on the reference to last year's picture needs a little edit, I think a space between the . and the http would do it. Thanks, I'll be watching.
Thank You..I noticed that the link was not right, I think I fixed it.
Betty
ALL right!!!! Too much time has passed again!
I hope Kachinagirl is still watching this Thread, because I want her to see this. Where are you, Karen?????? Don't see much from you at all!
Anyway--do you remember the 3 different leaves you sent me--Oh, I don't know--maybe 4 or 5 years ago? Well, i want you to see how big they have gotten and also that one of them is blooming. My first Epi bloom!
If someone can name what cultivar this is, I would appreciate it.
So, here are a few pictures of the 3 Epis---Karen!!! Yooo--Hooo!!!!
This is red Epi #1. It is the one with stiffer and fatter leaves. It has grown well, but is not showing any signs of blooming yet.
And now--Here is the Queen of the three!
It started blooming while still inside. I did not see it until I was putting the plant outside. Since then, it has had 3 more blooms and I see more buds forming. It is the longest-leaved and my favorite. I need to figure out a way to hang these. Gonna have to go back to my macramé days and do a few hangers. I still have all the cords.....
Here is one shot of the bloom. What is it with red?????? I cannot get any decent depth tot he bloom! Anyone else have this problem?
Just beautiful!!! I love the color.
Does the flower have that orange cast in person that shows in your last photo?
I am with you it is so hard to get good digital photos of red. Even if the photo prints good on paper it seems to lose it when I download to the computer. My son and daughter are so good with digital I'll ask their secret.
Betty
Picabo,
I will have to go outside tomorrow and look.
I think it is more just red. I might have "messed around" with the enhancement feature a bit trying to get some detail.
I think maybe the secret is to photograph flowers with a higher resolution setting on your camera. I don't know a whole lot about my new digital camera. I HATE reading directions in books!!!!
On the "Post your perfect Rose bloom" Thread, I asked someone how she got this absolute clarity and the 3D effect on all her Rose pictures. Like--you could see inside the bloom and see every vein and every edge and such, and she told me she photographs her pictures in the HQ 2560x1020 setting. She has an Olympus C-5050 200zoom 5.0 camera. Whatever all that means.......
I have only taken ONE picture of a Rose that fits in this quality of a category. How it turned out that way, I have NO clue. I was standing amid 2 bushes and had my cultivator tool in the left hand to hold the rose towards the camera. I took the photo with the camera held in only my right hand, BUT---it was a masterpiece!!!!! Even if i say so myself. I even entered it in DG Photo contest. Did not win, but I like it so much it is my Desk Top wallpaper.
Maybe you have seen it, maybe not, but here it is again! It only had this ONE bloom all last year as it was a newly planted Rose. It is called "First Prize". I always feel it could be in a Geographic Magazine or something.......
Gita
Oh Wow! That photo and rose are to die for.
I usually use a Cannon Rebel but also have a Nikon Cool Pics that I use. The Nikon is more of a point and shoot. I'll see if I can figure out how to use the HQ 2560x1020 setting on the Cannon. Thanks.
Betty
Betty and Gitagal, beautiful reds.
Jackie
Gitagal, My Night Blooming Cereus looks the same way. I have one "stalk" so tall I'm afraid its going to snao or tip over. It looks healthy tho!
pdoyle,
Gee! A response a month from my Posting! Yeah!!!!!
I am afraid as to what to do when it comes time to bring it in for the winter.....I know the other two(Red Epis) can hang, but the Cereus cannot. I Guess it will have to live on the table by my window--like it has for 3 years.
Penn_Pete suggested I get an aquarium stand and put the pot way don there in it. I have never seen one and I have no idea where I could get one. NOT spending mega bucks for a plant! Not my style.....
Has yours ever bloomed? Mine has not--as of yet.
Gita
No mine hasn't bloomed. It's a cutting I rec'd a year ago. I would say - with sitting the pot on the ground, the stalk is a little over knee high. I read what Penn_Pete said and wasn't sure what he was talking about. I'm kinda nervous about moving mine also. What about one of those wire tomatoe cages? I'm atleast going to have to get some kind of support in the pot. I've seen other pics of NB Cereus and they do get rather big & gangly. I'm not sure what the best means of support would be for this thing. Maybe someone will read this is and give us more ideas no? Right now I think I'm going to stick a stake in the pot.
The lady I got mine from said they either liked to be pot bound or at least 2 or 3 yrs old before they bloomed. I can't remember. I have to go back and check my notes.
I do know I can't wait to see this thing bloom. I read about them blooming all the time on here and I know it will be a real treat when it does.
Have a great day!
Dawn
Dawn,
Pete told me about the aquarium stand when I met him at the Botanical gardens here. I am a volunteer there.
From his description, it is a pillar-type of a stand all enclosed in glass. You put the pot down into it at the bottom. The walls support the long stems and the whole glass enclosure provides the humidity.
That is hoe I understood it.
Mine is over 3 years old AND it is pot bound. Hmmmmm....gotta be patient! The stems on mine are about 3' tall with leaves on top.
Gita
There was a great thread a year or so ago on Night B C.
Whoever posted the thread pruned her plant and it was short and compact. When the long stalks would start to grow she would pinch out the tips and leaves would start to grow there making the plant a more manageable size and COVERED with blooms. Not the tall rangy look you usually see in a NBC. It was beautiful. I have got to go away now, but will try to find that thread when I get home, It was really some good information.
Betty
I can't remember who, but someone here told me to use a tomato cage
It worked great for years
I slipped the pot into the cage(cage small side down)
The pot wedged in there and I could them place it anywhere in the garden
just stuck the spikes in the ground
It trained the plant to grow more upright
I have a dirt floor in the GH and it worked great in there too
It finally outgrew the pot so I just cut the cage with wire cutters
