Hi everyone,
I have ordered some leaves from the velvet leaf company and I am curious whether you can start them in water.
Any opinions?
Thanks,
Sue
Starting leaves in water?
Sue,
I have started some in water but have more problems with them rotting. My mom starts all of hers in water and hardly ever loses one, but she also runs water into gallon jugs and lets them sit for at least a week before using the water, so that might be the difference. I have better luck starting the leaves in perlite.
There's a lot of information about propagation in the sticky threads, too.

There's a rumour going around that you should use water in which some cutting has already sent out roots, or drop a pea into the water (it will send out a root really quickly). Either will speed up rooting. Then trim the roots to about 1/2 inch before potting into soil. At least, that is the sage rumour that I've heard.
Wow interesting!, is that like a dried pea or a fresh pea?
Have you ever heard of hooking up an aquarium filter to add air to the water. I remember people talking about that a few years ago.
I have a leaf in water right now as an experiment.
Thanks for the help,
Sue
I can't really say one way or the other.....the only way I learned in January was on www.rachelsreflections.com. She does it in straight perlite....all the directions on her index page....works for me???
ummm, any pea that will sprout. Don't they have to be dry? I'm not sure. Alternatively you can stick a willow cutting or aspirin (same thing, basically) in the water too. It's supposed to help it root faster and therefore not rot.
Thanks keyring maybe I'll just add an aspirin and see what happens.
Hi,
The ones I have started, I rooted in water. I did get it out of the water purifier here at work and then let it sit and warm up for a day. I put a sandwich bag over the top, rubberbanded it and poked 4 holes and then put the leaves in them. They rooted just dandy.
