First Roosting experience!

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Well with the horrible events of the past few nights my little guys have been very upset! The biggest thing I noticed is that they are now trying to find , for the first time,a place to roost at night! I would guess , good Chicken sense would tell them the higher the safer... Uh ,...sometimes!

" okay, were just tooooo old to sleep together anymore!"

Mine started trying to roost on the water bottle when they were a little bit over a week old. I rigged them up a roost with cardboard and a stick that's maybe four inches off the ground. There's nearly always four or five chicks perched on the stick and one on each of the two cardboard ends.

I've got mine a piece of a two by four set up the narrow way, but they haven't figured out what it is for yet.
we had al itlte milestone here, too.

I brought in a little dirt out of the dustbathing area the big girls use, last night. it is in a little dish. Some of my chicks really enjoyed digging around with their feet to find the chick starter i put in there. lol!

I also had a reoccuring case of pastybutt. She was all dirty, and so I finally took a bowl of water, about neck high on her, nice and warm, and held her in there and rubbed her butt until all the poop came off. She was remarkably cooperative. ( Who doesn't love a good bath, anyway?) and then I dried her off ( not as cooperative.) Eventually, I just blowdried her.

GLad to say, this am the butt looks good and fuzzy once again!

Yep I fixed a real roost for them too, but you know how kids are!!! They saw CockleLooLoo on the gate to the coop and decided that they would do like the big guy instead of using the real roost!
