What other type of pretty flower do hummingbirds like beside hibiscus? I want to encourage hummingbirds in my yard. Will they come even if I have dogs? They aren't outside all the time, but at least a couple of hours a day, usually after work, and a maybe half day on the weekends.
Suggestions?
There's so many....here's a few that draw them in my yard:
Salvias.....many....clevelandii, gregii, elegans, splendens
Hamelia, Callistemon, Buddleja, Comfrey, Vitex, Pentas, Cuphea, Shrimp Plant....Judicia, Agastache, Yellow Bells, Russelia.
I don't think the dogs would stop them, and if it did, the hummers could come when the dogs aren't out.

Here's a few too,
Crossvine (Bignonia capreolata)
Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis)
Standing cypress ( ipomosis rubra)
Firebush (Hamelia Patens)
Flame Azalea (Rhododendron austrinum)
There are so many more and I'm out of time right now. Don
The #1 attractor in my yard is Lantana (the native Horrida variety). Plant one of those beauties and you'll be overrun with hummingbirds and butterflies.

Here's what I have planted so far for hummers:
Black & Blue Salvia
Coral Honeysuckle
Cape Honeysuckle
Cross vine
Lantana
Porterweed
Firecracker Plant
Firebush
Firespike (Russelia equisetiformis)
Canna
Nasturtium
Powder Puff Bush
Red Brazilian Petunia
Skullcap
Orange Geiger Bush
Pentas
Golden Dewdrop Trees (Duranta repens)
Honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica)
Mexican Petunia (Ruella)
Mexican Flame Vine
Jatropha Bush
Fuchsia Bushes
Various red salvia
Now ..... keep in mind .... I haven't seen hummers in my yard yet. Meaning that I've been planting everything I hope will attract them. Two years and counting to try to get them to show up in my gardens! ;-)
Good luck finding the "key" plants to attract them, shortstuff! :-)
I didn't know fuchsia or mexican petunia attracted hummers. I may end up with them in my front yard instead of the back yard. lol Thanks for the suggestions. Red flowers are better to use aren't they? Since they are attracted to red and yellow I believe? I have a feeder outside my kitchen window and wanted to put a red hibiscus there but wanted to add some other flowers as well... as a little extra incentive. hehe The pink and yellow lantana is one of my favorites as it reminds me of my grandmother.
I think some areas are more prone to hummers than others. When I lived in Sugar Land (still around Houston but on the clear otherside I am on now) they would come right up and flutter in my ear! I didn't even have hummer friendly plants! I has roses, a gardenia (that never bloomed lol), petit oleander, camelia and maid of orleans jasmine. The front yard did have two hibiscus and an ixora, but I always saw them in the back yard. Are ixoras hummer and butterfly friendly? I have one in the front but it is getting way too much shade now that my tree has grown leaves again so I thought about moving it to the back yard.
Oh! And I was thinking of putting cannas on either side of the the back gate which is near the kitchen window!
