Snowrose- Wow what a cool show to watch. I learned alot just looking at the flowers. What does commercial winner mean?

( Kim) Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

My Gosh I just watched the show I think my plants look sick compared to though My plants all head up (Leafs) the ones in the show all look down and they all look as some kind of an oil is on them they are so shiney I guess I have alot more work to find out this stuff thanks for sending that show

streetcol - commercial vendors show some of their plants and can win awards.

Dimmer - if your leaf petioles are headed upwards and elongated, most likely they need more light. Some violet cultivars have glossy leaves, others don't.

Ok thanks as far as lit goes I have them in my east window I just took some pictures but I guess this is good for now thanksI will send a few
To show Kim

Thank you for sharing your violet collection photos, dimmer. You must receive a lot of joy from your plants.

Here's a good article about general violet culture.

Wow, what a show, Snowrose!!!! I certainly made my wish list. The article about violet culture is much appreciated. The more I read, the more I know how little I know.
I picked up 7 rings today. Do you start with these when the plants come to you in 4" pots like Bluebird sends them (after changing the soil of course?
Knowing about spacing of the leaves is beyond my grasp!!!
Today I took a few pictures of blooming Av's....just starting to bloom.....all mine except for what I ordered from bluebird don't have names, but i do have a pretty one that looks like it could possibly be Optimara 'London' (from your show)

the flower up close (without so much light)
Can I take a plant this big and put it in the center of the ring??

I am going to take pictures later....there was too much natural light shining on them to get the true colors...maybe I will just show what I took with too much light!!!!!

I never know how she is going to bloom another round????

Yes, the correct size ring. The pots goes goes through the hole and up. It's the rubber bands that hold it around the pot edge or can rest over the pot's edge. Am I clear as mud?

I am wondering how Optimara London (star shaped blossoms) was shown? According to the MVL in First Class II, it's not registered.

Your plant is very pretty, gessiegail. Nice symmetry. Lovely blossom close up.

I am going to run take a picture of the rings I bought today....you just set the plant down in the ring?????? I have no earthly idea why some are flat and some take off in every direction.

This is relatively flat but i don't know why....I never pinch leaves off because I don't know how. She is covered in buds...

Thanks for putting up with us Snowrose, but we learn a lot from you.
Lin, are you looking at your 'Annabelle' you sent to me as a baby....she has her first bloom with many buds..thanks again, Lin

This is the funniest and most deformed av I have....can't give her up until she blooms!!!!

Gessiegail, Glad you posted the photo of your leaf support pot. Looks as if it will hold a 4" pot. Is that right? Place your violet in it's 4" pot inside the support pot. I misunderstood before and I thought you were talking about the support rings.

I'll post a photo of the support rings....

The last violet looks as if it's multi-crowned. All look nice and healthy.

The lady told me those rings were very old...she practically gave them to me....she said that you put toothpicks to train the leaves.....I know nothing about grooming plants for this????
Do you mind telling me where you order those like you have.
Also, I have never self wicked although I have a lot of self wicking pots.
I ordered 2 dozen watermaid, but I tried one and i believe those watermaids keep them too wet?????
thanks, gail

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have only been able to make these bloom twice and I don't know why.....the bloom is a very pretty single pink bloom....

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

So, i got impatient and took a fourth one just like these and took all the outer leaves off just to see if I could get this one to bloom....reasoning behind this decision.....don't have one...just impatient waiting for more blooms!!!!

I just go bonkers over variegated foliage!!! I don't know if this is true, but I have been told by several people to always use the leaves to propagate that have the most green in them....in other words, the leaves wont have enough chlorophyll to make it!!!

I have only ordered one time recently for Av's and got them from Bluebird....nice av's.......
Aren't you having the time of your life????
Bed is calling me....head hanging down and eyes closing (LOL)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thought I would bump this up in case you missed the Photo Show.

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Thank you Snowrose, I for one had not see the show, it is truly something to aspire to, just to get one violet to look that good. I have a couple that were shown and it's nice to see what they can really be.

Gessiegail your show was good too, I enjoyed seeing so many of your violets. I can see why the variegated ones are you favorites, pretty with or without blooms.

Thanks Snowrose for bumping this photo show up...I had not seen it either....they are all soo pretty!
Gives us all something to aspire to.

I'm wondering how do they get all those Av's registered for the show with out a mishap taken place..you know like a broken leaf, etc???

I am so happy this thread got bumped up as i was wishing I could see Snow's plants again...........and again..........and again............pretty inspiring isn't it everyone???

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Glad you all enjoyed this violet show as much as did. It's not as good as seeing one in person, but is so nice to sit back, relax, be inspired and appreciate the efforts of others and their lovely plants.

MsC, you are right about mishaps. It can and does happen. Can you imagine?

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Gasp, my heart would stop!!!...I bet the mishaps put a damper on things...I'd probable cry like a baby...lol

I wonder when they will have the photos of National Convention from Denver up??

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I emailed Marjorie Bullard from Corpus Christi who went and she said she was working on all her pictures now to put together.....maybe she just meant her own pictures from the show....
