Never I say , Never let me into the Feed store while they have babies! Yep I did it! Went to get a Feeder, and stumbled up on these precious little feather legged babies! Hey They were only $2.50each , and I just lost 5 to a feral dog. I NEEEEEEDED them!!! so I bought 3 girls andi Roo. Then I saw the cutest little Brooder chock full of Araucana Baby Roos!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHh, Now you know since I have no Araucana , none , nada, not a single one , I just had to have a Roo!!!!????
It is just a little baby , .........Oh my,.....Hey Turkeybeard... didnt you say you had Araucana Girls and No Roos?????? HHHHHHHHHHHHHHey-alp!!!!!!
New Replacement babies! Creams?
Does anyone know if badgers eat chickens. Can a cat kill a banty? I lost a mama white silkie and her 5 chicks to something. I have never had a problem with predators, except for dogs.
There was no trace of feathers or anything and they disappeared at night. We didn't close the coop because we had never had a problem.
My dad saw a new badger hole nearby. We also have owls, but the hen and chicks were in the coop.
those are gorgeous! I'm strictly forbidden to go to the feed store myself :)
Hi there rustyswoman. I'd say raccoons, cats for sure for the chicks and probably the bantam. We are losing chickens in Antrim to a bear recently. Yikes!
Hey there Rustywoman! I just went through that with mine! I know for a fact if a dog can get to them at night, they are going to take all they can! Chickens cant see at night with no light and dont give a fight! So a Dog can pick them up and carry them off! I dont even think they kill them until they get to where ever they feel safe! So just be sure to keep your babies well locked up! I would guess most any predator could do the same! But I know most ferrets, Possums and Coyotes will kill on the spot!
I am so sad! They were sweet. I will keep them locked up. And thanks!
I am going to pick up some goslings tomorrow. When I ordered them the girl said that they protect chickens. I hope she is right.
Oh yeah, Eufaula, We all know you neeeeeeeeeeded them ! lol
They are really cute. Never seen the creams before. Cool !
Oooooooh how handsome, Zeppy! Oh I hope this is what they are!!! I just think They are beautiful!!!!!
Yes, they're one of my favorites. But not exactly the typical feed store breed: I'm surprised yours had them. Yours are standard size, right? Because I've not seen any feather-footed banties with the columbian color pattern (white w/ gray/black neck & tail feathers).
Yes , I had never seen full size feather footed breeds in a feed store before so I was surprised! I know they have several more, and its sooooo hard for me not to go and get them!!!! Heeheee!!!
Brahmas aren't as good layers as a RI Red or Orpington, but they're supposed to be good brooders. Of course, mine aren't, but they're barely a year old so I'm hoping that next year...
If my feed store had those, I'd be buying tons too.
Hmmmm, lets see, 5 Little barred rocks, 4 possible astrolorpes,3 Speckled Sussex,4possible red leghorns, 22 assorted Japanese babies,2 grown barred Rocks,1partridge Bantam Hen,1 RIR bantam Hen, 1 Silkie Hen,1Sultan ,1 Polish, 3grown Japanese, A pair of Mille fluer OE's, And 4 BB Red OE's,.....Oh and yes 2 grown Buuf O Roos,..... Hmmmm??????........ Yep I ve got room, got to get to the feed Store... hurry .. hurry before they get sold... R-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-run!!!!!!!
Oh my I forgot the little Araucana Roo!!!

Hey Zeppy,
If you want a good brooder, try a silkie. My 2 (now down to 1) white silkie bantams are fabulous brooders. They set in brooding early and I let them sit for about 3 weeks. When I know for sure they are broody, I order chicks. Whatever kind you like. Set the pick up date for about the 21st day (you don't have to be exact) and then at night (it has to be at night) sneak out and steal the eggs she is sitting on and replace with the chicks. I put 8 red sex link, which are great layers, under her. In the morning she was a happy, though slightly confused mama. In two days she was fiercly protective.
And then something ate her! And 5 of the chicks. They just disappeared. I am still trying to figure out what. However...
The two remaining chicks decided the other silkie (who was also brooding) must be their mama and they jumped in with her. I had no idea what was going to happen, but the next day, she had left the eggs and was the new foster mom!
Happy ending.
I find it is so much easier then raising them myself. So I always try to have a few silkies on hand. The eggs they lay are small, but edible. They do well in the cold winter and the hot summer. And they are cute. I prefer the white silkie myself.
Rusty You are so right! When I got my Japanese babies they were so tiny, and I was so afraid that they wouldnt make it with the weather so back and forth! We were cold one day and hot the next , last month. So I kept the little critters inside in a bird cage for almost 5 weeks! Then I took them to the chicken house and turned them loose. They were still sooooo small and of course still making their cute little "peep Peep" noises ! My One lone White Silkie Hen heard them and she had just started making broody noises that week! No eggs at all! But when she heard the babies she flew over the low separator and she has been their "Mama" ever since!
That just make my heart happy.
Do you mean hatch out her own? If she is a lone silkie, what are you going to cross her with? They would probably be interesting chicks. I did that the other year and the 3 chicks that hatched out were adorable. Some how they squeezed out of the coop and went under it. I saw a huge gofer snake go after them, but there was no way to save them. I never saw them again.
I'm definitely thinking about it, rustyswoman. I'd rather not order more chicks, and I don't have an incubator, so I'd love a couple hens to do all the work of hatching and rearing for me. :) My concern was that silkies are so small, they won't be able to incubate more than three or four standard-size eggs (I wouldn't hatch silkie eggs). Actually, I guess that wouldn't be such a problem. My brahma hen is so big and fluffy, she could hatch ten. Also, would the silkie hen do okay with a standard-size rooster, and would she be able to care for and defend her chicks with the bigger hens all around?
Ugh, the snake after those babies. So sad...
Those silkies can handle a bunch of eggs. It is cute to see them all puffed up on the eggs. I don't know about the rooster issue, but I think it should be alright. And I have 5 other full size hens Rhode Island and Arucanas and they don't bother her at all.
The original silkie went for my dads face when she thought he was bothering her chicks. Lucky she was in the coop and he wasn't! So if she'll tackle a full grown man, I think the other hens won't be a problem.
Yep , I wouldnt mind having a silkie Rooster too, but if she did lay right now and go to setting they would be some crazy mixed up babies! the only roo that is lose and has access is CockleLooLoo, and she doesnt like him too much! LOL!!!
No if she started setting I would just put a lot of other eggs under her that I really would like to hatch! Especially the Sultan andPolish cross eggs! Now that is going to be a mixed up baby!
Oh, I think it sounds like a great mix. Good luck. Now I want to get another silkie for back up so I can hatch some out again.
I can hardley look at another egg though. I have tons in the fridge and I am starting to feed them to the dogs. Can you imagine more eggs? LOL
But they do great eating the bugs off the property. I have alot less grasshoppers than before I let them free range.
Love all the pics!!! Tracey
