I planted some tulips last fall in a too-shady spot and they haven't done well. They never bloomed... the buds that are there have dried up... the foilage is still fine though - green and perky. Can I dig them up now and replace them with something else without killing or damaging the bulbs' future prospects? Where should I store the bulbs after I dig them up? (frig?)
I also, without much forethought, planted a long narrow bed last fall with just bulbs. They performed beautifully but now that the blooms have faded, the bed looks ugly and there is no room to squeeze in some annuals for interest. Can I dig up all these bulbs (hycacinth, daffodil, grape hyacinth, tulips) now and just store them until fall? Has anyone done this successfully? The foilage is still green.
Thanks,
Di
Can I dig up stunted tulips now?
Di, if the foliage is still green, you can move the bulbs but you will need to re-plant them, either in pots or somewhere else in the garden so that they can continue to build next year's bulb. After the leaves die down, then you can take the bulb out of the soil for storage.
Thanks June! I'll give it a try.
Di
