HI All:
*disclaimer -I'm new to DG and I don't know anything about gardening*
I have tulips and other spring bulbs (don't know what they are... I'm trying to find them in the plant section by matching up the leaves) that came up this year and none of them bloomed - all I have are green leaves.
I've checked the site the best I could to look for a "it's in trouble" section but couldn't seem to find anything like that. Is there something I'm missing on the site? Or does any one know what to do about my tulips?
I just moved into my first home, the previous owner lived here since the house was built in the 40's, but the house sat empty for about 2 years when she got to ill to live here and things have gone kinda crazy. There is a lot of "stuff" coming up in my backyard, but I have no clue what it is. I really should have listened to my grandma while she was still here!
Thanks
S.
Tulips and other spring bulbs
if bulbs come up and don't flower it's usually because they are young. some bulbs take several years before they flower.
Hi sianna and welcome to DG, If you have a (digital) camera, you can take pictures of your plants and post them on the plant identification forum http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/plantid/all/ and if anyone knows what they are, they will tell you, Also this is a good site to check out also. http://theseedsite.co.uk/
I just started gardening last spring, and DGners have been a great help to me in IDing plants among other things I needed to know.
Connie
One more thing to remember about bulb type flowers is that the green foliage needs to stay up after the flower is spent. Do not be tempted to cut down the leaves because that is how the bulb gets it's energy for next year's blooms. Wait until the foliage turns yellow and dries up. I never cut mine down. I just let them shrivel up on their own. My hundreds of daffodils are planted in among perennials that soon grow up around the dying foliage to camoflage it. Here is a pic of my daffs from last year. I haven't got out to take pics this year but they are even thicker and more beautiful this year in spite of the fact we had that late snow and cold temps.
Brenda
Brenda is right about not cutting the foliage off. I learned the hard way as a newbie that they don't come back in the shade because of the lack of sunshine. (Duh.) We also had some snow after the tulip foliage was up and several of mine aren't putting out blossoms now. The dafs and grape hyacinths are making it fine.
Beautiful bed Brenda!
Lovely daffodil bed Brenda!!!!
sianna994............Welcome to Dave's.........you have come to the right place for help with your plants. As Connie said, if you can get digital pictures of some of your plants, we may be able to help you identfy some of them in here. Also, as Brenda said, leave the foilage on your bulbs as its food for next years flowers.
