Who's the culprit?

Blackwood, NJ(Zone 7a)

I've noticed, both last year and this year, something is "cutting" off my tulip stems once they bloom. The leaves are left strewn around. I have a ton of squirrels, a few rabbits, and no deer. The stem looks like something cut it or bit it, but why? Why would it not eat the flower? Do squirrels do this sort of thing and why?

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Squirrels and rabbits both do that. Maybe sprinkle some red pepper around the plants to deter them.

Adrian, MO(Zone 6a)

they do that when they're finished blooming

Blackwood, NJ(Zone 7a)

I figured it was the squirrels. Thanks for the advice. I wonder why they do it.

Adrian, MO(Zone 6a)

is it just after they bloom or a while after they bloom? Mine do that also when they are finished their bloom cycle and I don't have any squirrels at all.

Blackwood, NJ(Zone 7a)

No, this is in the beginning to middle of the bloom. It's not the normal cycle; the stem has actually been cut or bitten in half.

Ripon, WI(Zone 4a)

Sandy, I have the same problem. The stem is snipped off about 1" under the flower. It doesn't happen on every flower, only one here and there.

In mine they are eating the buds off the top of the tulips--same, looks like they were cut right. Happened to my tulips that didn't freeze and 2 of my 4 hyacinth plants. I have squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, deer. Haven't seen any rabbits. Which one could be the culprit? Karen Shaver aka liebran

Adrian, MO(Zone 6a)

birds? I read somewhere where birds will sometimes attack crocus.

Ripon, WI(Zone 4a)

My flowers aren't eaten, just chopped off and laying there.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

My flowers aren't eaten either, just chopped off and left there, but it does appear some of the leaves have been eaten.

It's definitely rabbits eating mine. They have a hutch right in the middle of my flower bed, and I saw one chewing on the tulip.

Valencia, PA(Zone 5b)

We haven't seen rabbits here. The tops are bitten off and eaten. Weird. Karen

Ripon, WI(Zone 4a)

I've seen birds trying to land on them (mine, at least)...maybe they are breaking them off by their weight???
