Good places in SC for palm purchases?

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

In regards to this post in the Palm forum:

Does anyone know of any good palm dealers in the local Columbia, SC area? I'm looking for some specific types of palms that likely won't be just sitting around, as they are not hardy in this area. I'm not quite sure where to start looking.

I've considered talking to the folks at Woodley's, but they are pretty expensive and might charge me a lot to custom order what I want. Any ideas?

Thanks

Not familiar with the Columbia area, keonikale, but in Charleston it's Palm Trees Unlimited, headed up by Ollie Olivier. It's all he does. Palm trees. Palms and ferns were always my bugaboos in my horticultural education, and remain so. But Ollie can spot and identfy a palm from 10 miles away. I can only stand in awe! Every palm I've gotten from him has done well in spite of my ignorance. I was real leery about planting 3 Livistona chinensis in a particular location exposed to high winds off the water. He said they'd be ok after a few years. First year, they looked like hell after the winter freezes. Second year, they didn't suffer as much. Now in their 3rd year, and they're gorgeous, and growing like fiends. Guess some "experts' really are experts...

Thanks, I'll have to look him up and give him a ring. Charleston is a lot easier to get to/from than Florida, LOL.

Thanks again,

John, I was just at the Southeastern Palm Society meeting this past Saturday where I picked up a copy of the hot off the presses "Hardy Palms for the Southeast". They list where to buy hardies and these are the places closest to Columbia.

Chilly Palm Tree Co., Rock Hill, SC

Cold Hardy Palms, All Seasons Mulch Market, 1820 River Road, Johns Island, SC
www.coldhardypalms.net (Stono, ever hear of 'em ?)

McKenzie Farms, Scranton, SC

Palm Trees, Ltd. (the one stono mentioned)

Woodlanders, Aiken, SC

They had lots of other places in GA and NC listed. One I did not see that *might* have palms is Nurseries Caroliniana in N. Augusta. If you have not been to that nursery, you should take a ride over there. It is worth it!

Have fun looking!

Thanks for the links. It's hard to find some of those sites by Googling alone.

Still doesn't look like any have the trees I'm specifically looking for. I seem to always be out to find the hard stuff *sigh*

But I do have a general idea of pricing now:

I'll look into that place in North Augusta as well. Thanks again.

John, always ask if you don't see something on the web site. A nursery will rarely list things they have in very small numbers. D-mailing you a name of someone who might be able to help you find your palms.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

i have seen a palm nursery in Lexington when i was last up there visiting friends and family in my life long hometown (lexington) in December. idk the name of the nursery, but i know where it is. If you are headed west-bound on 378, right before it goes over I-20, it is on your right and it has some Queen palms and some others palms that i cant remember

Yep I know that place, I pass it every day going to/from work. I have looked daily and never see any of the palms I'm specifically looking for. Looks like they just carry outdoor palms hardy to this area.

I've put in an order with Woodley's and I should hear something this week. I'm hoping they can find us a 5-6' Christmas Palm for our main room with an 8' ceiling. We decided to get a 7' Majesy Palm for the very tall foyer instead.

In the Columbia area, call Cooper's Nursery. It's in the NE area, on Parklane. They have good plants and good prices.

Grantsboro, NC(Zone 8b)

Well I saw a good variety at Wally World this week end. Go figure why are they selling them?
Sago, and a few others. I have some Mexican Fan seeds if you want some .'Let me know.

Wal-mart had an incredible 50% off sale of Palms here too. We bought a huge 6' Chinese Fan Palm for only $6. They had tons of majesty palms as well.
