HELP: A MIDWEST GARDENER TRYING TO HELP A TEXAS SISTER!

Au Gres, MI(Zone 5a)

My sister lives in the North FT. Worth Area, and is looking for a place to purchase a White Lilac that will grow in Texas. Does anyone out there know of such a place where you can buy one. She already has some that are Lilac in color, but is looking for a White One.

Thanks

How long has she had her lilacs? The only area in Texas that lilac are said to grow is North Texas, ie The Panhandle. There are a few purple lilacs that were developed for California. None have been developed for Texas. She will probably have to buy mail order, get one that lists an 8 or 9 in plant hardiness and hope for the best.

I think there's a Vitex tree that blooms white. That's also called a Texas Lilac and most garden centers carry it although the white may be hard to come by.

Here's a link:

She might also try Green Mama's on Davis Blvd in North Richland Hills, Redenta's Garden Center in Arlington, or Weston Gardens off Anglin Rd. in southeast FW.

I hope you find what you're looking for. I am from Michigan myself and loved my mothers purple lilacs and was disappointed in moving to Texas to not have them in abundance here. For me the mountain laurel has been a nice substitute...but that comes in dark purple. Hope you find a white lilac!

I bought a couple of Betsy Ross (white blooming) lilacs several years ago. They have both done well and bloomed beautifully. I found mine at a little mom and pop nursery which sadly has gone out of business since then. I am in zone 8.

Green Mamma's would be my first thought, but she may have already gone there. Another nursery in FW is Archie's Gardenland, which has been in business a very long time. It is in West FW @ 6700 Camp Bowie Blvd. near I-30, ph 817-737-6614. They carry a large variety of plants, but a little pricey. Also Mike's Garden Ctr. 817-293-8800 in South FW (and 2 other locations). I would call and ask for the particular plant before making the drive to either.
Good luck.

Sheila........thank you for the information...will forward that to Carol as well............You Texas gals are just so helpful...
Thank you again so much.

I forgot about Archie's! It's a great place!

There's also Into the Garden on W. Vickery north of Hulen before you get to I-30. I've not been to Anna's Old World Gardens yet, but I plan to this weekend. It's on 8th Ave near where 8th Ave & Cleburne Rd merge in south FW, on your way to the hospital district.
