Rainy Day In PA Hen House

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

We had a few more chicks hatch in the coop, 2 little bantom X silkies, they are so cute and tiny. I only could get a picture of one of them because the other would not come out from under mama. This little one was born 2 days ago.

Mama silkie has adjusted well back in the coop, she's letting the roosters take a good look this morning. Yesterday she would not let anyone near her chicks.

Both roosters seem to be gentle with the little ones.

I took this picture on the way to the hen house, I hope all this rain don't ruin the blooms. They opened up yesterday.

I need to spring clean this hen house, what a mess. These are my 2 little bantoms, they finally have a nest box to lay there eggs in. Now they will probably go broody on me. This picture was taken the day before mama splash's eggies hatched. You can see her help mate in the nest with her.

We added nest boxes on the floor for the mama's with babies, they seem to be happy in there new boxes.

The other hens leave the mamas and babies alone? Are these all bantams, or are there standard-size birds as well? I'm considering getting a silkie or two for broody purposes, as the light brahma I got for this purpose is not taking the hint.

Really gorgeous pics.

Im so jealous! My Silkie hasnt laid any eggs yet and she is over 15 months old! She was broody for a while and when the new chicks arrived she adopted them and never did lay an egg! Im thinking about putting her in with My Partridge Cochin Roo just to see what happens..... Now that would be some cute mixed up Chicks!!!!

The others in the coop did leave then new kids on the block alone, but that's because mama was very vocal when she went in the coop. Yesterday she let them inspect the babies and everyone seemed to get along fine. I only have silkies and 2 old english bantams together, no big breeds. You can mix them, I just didn't have enough room in the big pen for all these little ones, so we built them there own coop.

I found 2 hens last evening who got off there nest, I had 8 cold eggs, I'm so upset. I wonder if all the excitement in the coop caused that. 2 were not fertile, but the other 6 looked like they were very close to hatching. I had one more born yesterday it's a little yellow one and a few more pipping. I hope they hatch out ok.

15 months no eggs, wow that's hard to believe. I think mine started to lay at 6 months, I'll keep an eye on the ones I keep this year to see when they start laying.
