ID needed on this tropical

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Thought maybe it (white arrow) was a type of heliconia, but I'm not sure. It's prominent at Akaka Falls on the BI. Any idea what it might be? I'm also curious what the taller plant behind it is... I suspect a tall ginger of some sort (maybe white ginger?).

Thanks
-John

Looks like Helicona and hard to tell without a flower. Is that a flower from your mystery plant in the lower right?

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

I'd say the same. Heliconia-like growth & leaves. That does look like an emerging flower like AlohaHoya mentioned.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

it does look like a heliconia-the bloom in the bottom right is a heliconia bloom. The tall ginger in the back is a torch ginger

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Thanks guys. Maybe I can find a photo of one with a flower. Torch ginger gets THAT tall? Wow, I've always thought they were shorter.

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Well, looks like the tall one is torch after all. I had this photo in the same group.

keonikale,
You are growing torch ginger outside in zone 8a???????????
I always thought it was a zone 10 ginger.
Hmmmmm...........
I have always wanted that one, but it was so expensive, and I thought it would've survive in my climate. Can you tell me a little bit about where you are growing it?? What type conditions, etc., I am really thinking of going ahead and biting the bullet on it, to see if it will grow here. Where did you buy yours???

LOL, boy I wish I could do that. All of these photos are from one of our trips to HI. Once a year I get to go and photograph all the plants I can, and that was last years trip. Sorry I can't give better news, but believe me, if I could - I would.

Now on the flip side, I'm up for a challenge. While I doubt it withstand our winters I'm going to try putting one of these in the ground and see what happens. My parents did this with a few gingers here last year, and they came BACK this spring.

I'll let you all know what happens.

Oceanside, CA(Zone 10b)

As you can tell, I love Gingers. I have more photos that I'll try and post sometime.

I also love Heliconia's. I'll post some photos of them below. Anyone care to ID them all? I'd love to know.

the first heliconia is a yellow caribaea-they are some of the largest-
the second is a rostrada
the fourth looks like a caribaea of some kind
the fifth is H. chartacea 'sexy pink'
the sixth is a wagneriana
the seventh might be a red caribaea

I am trying some heliconias as well-even a caribaea-but I think the caribaeas might be tough to grow in containers-even in a grhouse.
Nice pictures!

Thank you Thank you Thank you - now I know what to look for. My DW will be "thrilled" LOL

The type I'm growing are 6 Heliconia PSITTACORUM ANDROMEDA (Parrot's Beak), 1 HELICONIA GUYANA, 1 Heliconia STRICTA IRIS, and 2 Heliconia MEXICAN GOLD.

Next time you are over here, give me a call!!!

Hey, I saw a stand of yellow gingers (Hedychium) growing in a sheltered spot in Portland Oregon...that has to be a zone 8?

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

Do the heliconia bloom most of the year?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Over here they do.
