mIni plantings

Thomasville, GA(Zone 8a)

My Mother has recently gone to an assisted living facility and I would love to give the employees an AV. How would you plant a miniture in a coffee cup or similar planter? Would I put gravel in the bottom or what other suggestions would you have? Thanks Elaine

(Zone 1)

Elaine: I wouldn't plant it in the coffee cup, but instead just put the little AV pot inside the coffee cup. I love using cups, small bowls, candle holders, any kind of decorative container to hold my smaller potted plants! I call these my cache pots.

I just have mine each in a 21/2' pots inside the demitasse.....you can't plant in anything which doesn't have good drainage I wouldn't think......minis require more care than the standards....my suggestion would be to get standard 4" African violet and find a suitable creative container ( you might have to put a little container under the violet to water from the bottom.....the average person doesn't know how to take care of an African violet, so you might want to attach directions with each one....let someone who knows better answer....for the plant to do well, you would need to repot the plant in good new soil.....I use 1/2 perlite and 1/2 AV soil.....
good luck....
