Sunflower?

Is this a sunflower? It's been growing under my rose arbor and I sometimes let things grow just to see what they are. I have a bird feeder under there, so that's where the seed would have come from --

Yes it is, and a very healthy one too. I love those volunteers, they are strong and produce a lot of flowers.
If it is in the wrong place you can move it if you take enough soil with it, especially on a cloudy day.

Oh, goody! I love sunflowers. I deliberately planted some out back and got NUTHIN. I think I'll leave it where it is -- if it weren't happy there it wouldn't have volunteered, is my thought.

The sunflower is pretty! When I first got to the house (beginning of january). I had sprinkled some sunflower seeds along a path. Now they are all coming up, I think they are giants coz they keep getting bigger and bigger :) I can't wait til they bloom then I'll be able to tell for sure when its gonna rain that day or not.

I know they track the sun, but how do they predict the rain?

I'm glad you posted that pic. I've had hundreds of these sprouting everywhere and didn't know what they were. I figured they were from the bird feeder, but wasn't sure because I used the shelled sunflower chips so I don't have the hulls everywhere. I thought the "chips" wouldn't sprout, but I guess there must be some whole ones in there. I've been pulling them up, but may have to let a few go to see what they do.

Oh, yeah, how do they predict rain?

I'm not sure how they do it. I just know someone told me once when I was a little girl that after the flower blooms it will follow the sun, and if it is going to rain they will 'look' at teh ground so they don't get thier faces wet. So when my sunflowers are 'looking at the ground' I wear boots or flip flops.

another pic with several sunflowers in the background at different stages...often times they will pop up when they are ready

Now that makes sense... I will have to pay attention when they look down.

The only ones I grow are volunteers. I feed black oil seed and love those sunflowers. They are smaller blooms that are displayed up and down the stalk.

My camera wasn't working when that little one was gorgeous or I'd have posted a picture. It's fading, and I'm just leaving it there for seed. Several others have come up, though. They're delightful. Glad to know about the rain thing, too!

Isn't it funny -- when I've planted them they've done NOTHING. So drop one in the rose garden and Katy bar the door.

Somebody's showing us this gardening stuff really is out of our hands! LOL

And thank heaven for that! Knowing the human race, if we really were in charge, there wouldn't be a plant left!

well the patch this year is about twice the size as last year.... and I have a gallon bag full of seed heads. I didn't even get 1/2 the seed heads off before putting the rest in the burn pile. I will probably have sunflowers come up there next year.

they make a wonderfull hedge as long as you know it will completly die down every winter.
