Freeze damage on grape vines

Wichita, KS(Zone 6b)

My concord grape vines had already set fruit when we had two below 20 degree nights. The vines now *look* dead. So far I have seen no sign of new growth. The vines are only about three years old and this was their first fruit set. Does anyone know if the vines will likely get new growth and from where is it likely to come? I am leaving the vines alone at this point since I have no clue if the nodes will send new stalks or if the new growth has to come from the base.

The grape vine should be OK. It may be slow in returning so wait until new growth starts before pruning. Here is an A & M link to grapevine cold hardiness. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to additional links.

Thanks. I don't see the link however. I can see a new leaf growth now low down on each. I hope to see more soon or I'll lose more than one season on them.

Vashur,

I'm glad you asked this question. I put in 2 Concord grape vines last year and lost all the buds and leaves this spring also. Mine haven't started to put out new growth yet though. :o(

Sorry, I forgot to include the link. Here it is:

By those articles the grapevine hardiness is greatly lessened by the several weeks of warm weather preceeding the two days of hard freezes so there still is no answer as to how much of the upper stalks I have lost. I guess if there is only one growth on each vine I can start pinching the growing end to get it to bush out later on but it still may take a couple more years before I again have vines mature enough to reach production.

Vashur, a certain answer will emerge in a few weeks. Its hard to tell for sure before then. Grapevines have dormant buds that can sprout so it depends on how much damage the vine itself took. About 90% of my grapes seem to be OK but a few are just sitting there. I expect a few will never wake up.

Update: I was amazed yesterday to see that at least one of the recovering concords is blooming again. I had no idea that was even a possibility. I am still leaving the dead looking branches alone until I know for sure they really are dead.
