Every year I try to plant something new that I have never tried. This year I am going to attempt Watermelons. I bought seeds today for a hybrid type "Bush Sugar Baby". It is an eighty day watermelon.
Does anyone have any suggestions for growing watermelons?
Watermelon
Watermelons have two requirements a loose preferably sandy soil and space. The "icebox" size like Sugar Baby and its derivatives need about a 6 x 6 space, but they can be trained up on a fence. The vines need to be in full sunlight. Nutrient wise, they are not demanding, nor do they require much water. only the striped cucumber beetle is a major insect pest, Some soils may contain systemic diseases, but so far I have avoided those.

Thank you very much for your help!
A Sugar Baby hybrid could be Jade Star. It gets basketball size [15lb.]. It is dark green and round. My daughter liked it...I prefer larger types.
Soil that has not raised melons before or for several years tend to raise healthy melons. I sure had enough of wilts on my soil years ago...whew!
