They are so adorable, aren't they ? This may give you pause tho:

" With a gestation period of 28 days and the capability of a female to become pregnant the day after giving birth, litters can be produced on a monthly basis. By late June this efficiency breaks down and the female may not breed for several days or not at all after giving birth. A female cottontail may have five to seven litters of four to five young in one year. "

If they are about 5-6 inches long, they will probably not be in the hole for THAT much longer. Their eyes should be fully open and if they are hopping around, I would think they will not be around soon. If you approach the area and they all hop away, I would just see if you can maybe dig your holes around their hole, or just carefully remove some of the nesting material, set it aside, plant the roses, then make a new hollowed out area and replace the nesting material in it, in case they still need a place to hide. I have lots of bunnies and have not had them chew on roses, but if you were concerned, you could put some protection around the base of the roses, like plastic collars. The bunnies in my area are more interested in nice soft green things like tulips and crocuses and stuff, not rose stems. I have not seen a mother rabbit have more than one litter in the same spot, but maybe that is just me. I think she will build a new nest for her next litter.

Get a beagle.

My neighbor brought over some babies last Spring to show my DG who was up visiting for the week. His dog had found the hidey hole. They were so precious that I wouldn't look at them twice . He took them to the elementary school science teacher with all good intentions. His wife made him go back and retrieve them, as she is an RN and had some concerns with rabies and other diseases. I don't want to know where they went then.
We have a war with the rabbits here. They eat roses, veggies, shrubs, if it costs more that 5 dollars, they'll eat it.
My Dad always said that rabbits won't jump over a fence, even those little 12" edging fences. He was 90 and I reckon he knew what he was talking about.
I don't know what to tell you about it, I know how we handle it.

glevely.................get coffee grinds....lots of it.....and put around your plants.....am told the rabbits do not like the residue of caffeine...If you have a restaurant or Starbucks by you ask for their coffee grinds....it really works............or........you can get LIQUID FENCE....You can get that product at Meijer's or Lowes, or Home Depot or Menard's..... Good Luck

I have a greyhound and I have to be constantly alert so that if there are babies, he won't be able to get them, because that would break my heart and I would never be able to forgive myself for letting him near them. If I think the rabbits are taking over, I live-trap a bunch of them and take them to a floodplain area about 5 miles away. I let them go there, where there is a lot of nice green vegetation. I just can't hurt them. Mosquitoes yes, rabbits no. For me, it would be the same as killing my dog.

I have a rabbit that squeezes through the bars of my white picket fence. She/he had a field day chewing on the braches of my rose bushes this winter. It also chewed on the lower branches of my tri-colored beech tree. It left behind lots of poop which my dogs love to eat. Yuck! I use Liquid Fence and that keeps it away. The thing I did wrong was stopping to spray during winter. I should have given a good shot in January before the snow flew. I will remember to spray more often this fall/winter.

I know rabbits are food for a lot of other animals. I know I have coyotes and bobcat and fox. I just don't know how they keep missing eating this pesky rabbit. Since I've been spraying this spring it stopped coming in the yard. Thank goodness. I don't know why they love roses so much. You would think the thorns would deter them.

We raise rabbits to eat..We have 2 does and a buck. We have had as many as 13 babies at one time, from each
Wild rabbits hang around the pens to get the throw outs.. None of them bother the garden or my plants. Thank goodness. No more babies, going to get out of the business.Cheaper to buy them at our local store, than to raise them
I have a compost pile that will last me for years to come cause of the bun buns..
We also have a buck that got out of his pen ,so he will probably breed with a wild one.and ther will be bun, buns around anyway.. Rabbits love clover and dandylions, maybe that is why they leave all my plants alone Aleta
