My E. crenatum bloomed last night. The fragrance was very strong. I picked the bloom and brought it inside for the night.
Epiphyllum crenatum
Gorgeous! Guess I'll have to wait another year--sigh! My Epis are apparently too young still.
Bill
Beautiful Clare! do you happen to know which var. you have there? I have two types of the crenatum, chichicastenega and casteneda (not sure about the spelling on either...), the chichicastenega lost a few huge buds last week and I am not sure why;( nor am I sure exactly what the difference is casue I have yet to see either of them bloom, though i am very curious - I can't really id any variation in the foliage.
this is Casteneda, the buds do seem to be much greener than those I still have left on the chichi (what silly names these Epis have!)
Thanks, Bill and Abby.
Abby, I had some bud drop too. I think that is normal. I had another one open though, and there are still more to come. I think I have the Epiphyllum crenatum var. kimnachii and Epiphyllum crenatum var. chichicastenango. The Epiphyllum crenatum var. chichicastenango is the one blooming now.

wow Clare! I can't wait for mine to bloom (though I suppose I will have to;)
would love to see your kimnachii when it blooms!
Thanks, Abbie! I'll be sure to post when it blooms, but I haven't had buds on it yet, and I've had it for about two years.
Beautiful blooms, Clare!!
Thanks, Ursula! How is your jungle cage? Are all your epi's out now? Are you having any blooms yet. I think you have a gorgeous red that usually blooms this time of year, don't you? I can see that my Epi oxy plants are starting to put on buds, which seems early this year.
Clare, all my Epi hybrids are now finally on the deck and they are budding. But I am still a month away from flowering - except for one large pot of hybrid Ackermannii which I had picked up last week at a local nursery. Couldn't resist it, it was so well grown. That one shows a couple of red flowers already.
It is nice to "think Epis" again!!
My Epi oxy is still in the greenhouse - growing along the ceiling! It is still a bit chilly at night to move everything out of the greenhouse into the cage. Soon!!
Thanks for the update, Ursula! I'm glad to hear that you have buds. I think mine started early this year due to the unusually cold winter that we had. It got down to 32F a few times and was 28F for a few hours one morning. All of my epi's were under my semi-covered patio, and that overhead protection made all the difference, I think. Even the trees above protected a lot of my plants from receiving damage. That Ackermannii is a nice cheerful red. I like it a lot. I think I have it stuck in a pot somewhere. I can't wait to see your Epi oxy this year!
Here is my E. crenatum blooming again. I love this one! Ants are all over the flower. I've been spraying with Safer's Insecticidal Soap, but I don't want to hit the flower for fear of destroying it.
Simply GORGEOUS!!
Clare, it's lovely.

Clare, you could make me want to grow anything..................so fine.....thanks
Beautiful blooms, Clare!!!
I love this time of year. Several of my eppies are blooming or have buds.
Betty
Thanks, All!
