Need help with a small area

We're trying to figure out what to do with this area. It's been nothing but a weed patch for two years and we're sick of it! It has privacy fence on two sides and the patio next to it. It is clearly visible as one is walking to the back entry door, or sitting at the patio table. I want it to be neat, but not elaborate. Simple is what I'm looking for. The area is rarely used, as our shed is just behind the flower bed to the right of the picture, so there's no view of the backyard. I'm going to move my potting bench next to the fence section to the left of the picture.

So, what to do with the rest of the space? It It is 10 feet long down the patio side and 8 feet wide from patio to fence, gets midday sun, shaded in the morning by the house and in the evening by the fence. The two ideas we've had is cover it with landscape fabric and fill it in with pea gravel and set a few pots of flowers here and there, or put down stepping stones and plant very low ground cover between them. Either would work, but I want to make sure we're doing the right thing, because I want to fix it and forget it! LOL

Please offer up any ideas or comments you have. Oh and please ignore the pile of mess in front of the potting bench. That's all getting dealt with this morning, as well as setting the fence in concrete so the pieces of lumber stuck in the hole at the end of the fence will be going as well! :o)

Thanks all!
