Anyone in the low country grow Canna musafolia?

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Just wondering if it needs a lot of water and if it's all right with part shade?

Ordered one just to try it out.

Most cannas do fine in hotter areas with a bit of shade. I don't grow musafolia, but have lots of other types that flower in an area that only gets direct sun for a few hours a day.

I've seen some canna's growing in a lot of shade but on the other hand I know many types prefer full sun all day and constant water. I'm just getting one so I only have one shot at not killing it. LOL.

I have the musafolia and I grow it in full sun, it seems to do the best in full sun. After one season though, you will have a huge clump!

Getting just one is my usual strategy when trying something new, too. I must admit I'm a bit of a plant collector. You know, buy one, maybe propagate it in a few years, shove them all together type- that's me. It's great when my friends and I have 'trowel tours' in each other's yards. It's baaaad when my eyes are bigger than my pocketbook!

I've been getting into seeds and rooting from cuttings etc. It's a lot cheaper to fool around with plants that way. Also if what you grew just isn't working out right you can just get rid of it or vise versa, seeds, cuttings and make more. That's what I'm planning with the canna, if I like it I have room to grow many if I want. This year I'm working on a hardy hibsicus garden by trading seeds. Right now I have 7 different hibiscus growing and I'm sending out a SASBE to someone who's sending me a mix of what she has. I would be happy if I could come up with 20 different flower colors. I have 5 different MG's growing just see if I like the flowers. I only have one place that's good to grow MG's so I'm trying to get a hold of a real exotic looking one.

Corey, be very careful with that beautiful blue MG. It is thought to be the new kudzu around here. It will pop up all over your garden and your neighbor's too.

That's why I have it where it is. It really has no where to go. I've been growing MG's for 8 years and nothing has gotten away from me. You can't just grow MG's over your back fence and forget about them or at least not in the low country, they very well can get out of hand. I also grow Muscadines and those will spread everywhere too. The grapes are are easy because I pick the grapes and the dogs finish off any that hit the ground. The funny thing is the dogs signal me that the grapes are ripe, they start eating them off the vines. LOL. The trick is going to be getting rid of the MG's I have growing now and replacing them with different ones. Mine come up from roots every year not seeds.

Hehe, I'm letting the evil MG's loose. Still looking for balsawood tree seeds. Hehe.

I gave up on the balsa idea. I can see that getting out of hand.

OK Corey, if that is your picture (lol) you need a new haircut

Those blue perennial MG's do come back from the roots and the roots can travel for 50' or more. I actually planted one and it died on me; talk about mortification, everybody can grow MG's can't they??? Turned out it didn't matter as I have about a gazillion of my neighbor's perennial blues popping up all over.

Goodness, Core! Great pictures!!! I want those, too!!
