Hello there,
This is my first post..and hopefully not too stupid a question:)
I'm interested in planting a couple of Blueberries in Containers. I've been doing some research on this and have gotten the impression I need to have one plant of two different 'varieties' to actually get a crop. Is this right?
If so, I am thinking about one Tifblue and one Climax variety blueberry. How large would these get in a container? I can't afford them to get too big..I only have so much yard, and if they start casting too much shade my veggie garden will not be happy:)
Thoughts? Comments? Advice?
Thanks!
Steven
Blueberries in DFW
I am probably the worst person to get advice from on blueberries, but I will tell you that I have a Sunshine Blue blueberry in a pot. I bought that one because it is supposed to need fewer cold hours than other varieties. I planted it in a pot that is about 22 " indiameter and I used rose dirt and then added sulfur to it because we have very alkaline soil. Sulfur brings the ph down. This is my second spring for this plant and it has more than doubled and probably has 50 or so berries on it now. It's been fun to see blueberries grow in central Tx.
Here is a link to a Texas fruit tree discussion from three or so months ago. A few people discuss blueberries and blackberries. Hope this helps

I haven't been able to find blueberries since I have started my most recent garden. However I have been researching them here and there since my last garden where they didn't make it. From what I understand it is true you should have two, and the two you picked sound good. Also in order for them to live and grow in Tx you must keep the soil very acidic. That will also help blackberries too in case you want to grow those as well. I've not seen blueberries get that big even with a lot of berries on them, say a couple feet, like a shrub,A friend of mine has had one for a few years and its still shrubbish. Do they get big like trees?
We had blueberries this yr @ the Farm where I work.
We had the two you have chosen so I would say they are good choices since you get more chill hours than we do down here & those are suppose to be good for the Houston area.
If you think about it ck w/me in January, & we will have them again, I'm almost sure.
Well, I don't know much of anything about blueberries, but I do know that mine has berries on it and I have only one. Maybe some are self polinating?
Mine had blueberries on them... I was eating blueberries for breakfast every morning for about a month, then one of the blueberry bushes up and died, the other is now making very dry blueberries.... I am sad and not quite sure what to do with/for them...
