Pollinating Passiflora edulis ??

Fern Park, FL(Zone 9b)

I'm growing P. edulis in a screened porch area. How are the flowers pollinated? Will I need to hand pollinate? Or should I put the plant outdoors where it can be pollinated by butterflies or other insects?

They are pollinated best by carpenter bees. Honey bees aren't very good at it. Different varieties have differeing abilities to set fruit by themselves, some are self sterile, particularly the yellow forms.

For those that are self-compatible, hand pollination works well. We have several hundred fruit on our vine.

Not all Edulis are self fertile. There are many edulis hybrids now and some are difficult to get to fruit. Others will fruit like crazy. Some are easily pollenated by insects, some really need hand pollenating and some don't need any help at all. If you know what type you have, that would be very helpful.

Mark, I have the yellow fruiting one as you know. Did your seeds germinate?

Paul, yes that is the one I gave you at the round up.

no they didn't but like I said, I kinda lagged plantiing them. I only had 3 total seeds come up of the one I sent you. Maybe now that it's warming up, more will happen.
