Hi Everyone,
My I'm full of questions tonight :)
Is there a name for what this plant is doing ? it has 2 colors of flowers. There are white with purple centers and than on the same plant there are plain purple flowers. Is this unusual? The white flowers sparkle like they have been sprinkled a little with glitter. Very pretty.

Is there a name for this?
Wow! That's a Beautiful AV. I remember someone talking about AV's "Sporting", but I don't remember exactly if that's the definition of what your plant is doing. Will have to google .... maybe one of the pro's will see your post and come along before I get back this way!
Great Growin!
Lin
Boy that sure is a gorgeous plant!!
Thanks! Yes it is a beauty. This is one of my walmart violets so it is probably an optimra.
When I first got it, it was white with purple centers only, than when it rebloomed it turned out this way.
Oh, I looked up something about sporting and that's not it. Someone on this forum who really "knows" AV's will have an answer I'm sure. Whatever it's called, if it's some sort of mutant or what, I Love that Plant!
Lin, I am one of the beginners, but I have noticed on many plants where i was told that it was sporting....that it blooms differently each time it blooms???? I just don't know if names will ever be as important as they are now. I went to corpus Christi today...(envy set in when I saw everyone's blooms and my new ones from Bluebird aren't doing much yet)....I promise you that I found some Av's that are prettier than the ones I ordered......
Wow! I want to come to Texas and go to the nursery with you! I sure wish the two nurseries we have here in town would carry AV's. Guess there aren't enough fanatic's in Daytona Beach!
Oh, I thought I read something when I was searching yesterday that a sport is when the plant grown from a leaf comes out totally different from the mother plant? With my brain though, I forget something 5 minutes after I read it! Sport or Unsport ... They are all so pretty to me! I just love Sue's plant at the top of this thread ... so pretty with two different color blossoms! Now, see ... if I had bought that plant, I woulda thought it was two separate plants in one pot!
(whining right now as I always let the batteries charge down on my camera!!!!) Yes, that plant is fabulous.....I don't know what it is called when the mother plant always blooms a different bloom??????
glamourpuss - Dittos to the above. Sporting or mutation is interchangeable.
Mutation: Describes an African Violet or part of an African Violet which exhibits physical characteristics indicative of a genetic change in that variety.
Your plant looks charming that way. I wonder how it might be the next bloom cycle?
Gail: I was just sitting here reading something I printed out earlier ... Snowrose posted a link for me with informtion for the AV Beginner! Very imformative! It's about growing for show and how plants are judged for shows. There's a section regarding Color of Blossom, which says: Sometimes varieties will show signs of mutation (or sporting) by putting up a blossom stem that is entirely different from the other blossoms on the plant! This is especially true of bi-color plants and fantasies (blossoms that are speckled). This is a fault which costs one half point per wrong color blossom.
So .... I have learned something!
Thank you Snowrose for that very informative link!
Oh oh looks like I've lost a few points :)
Good thing I'm not showing that one,. Thanks everyone for the info very interesting. I will have to tag that one so we can see what color it blooms next time.
Best wishes,
Sue
Sure, Lin! Always something interesting in violets, isn't there? 'Fantasy' blossoms in particular as well as bicolored as you said can be unstable.
I love the look of Sue's AV there!
Hey! Maybe we could start a Show of Muted/Sport AV's .... I would buy bunches if they were all that pretty! I could have a collection of AV Mutations!
Thanks would be a good idea. Step right up and show your freaks of nature, lol
It is kind of pretty though.
I guess you probably already know but all blossom 'chimeras' are sports/mutations. You can't breed for this.
Oh, that's right! I remember someone saying that awhile back! Isn't it that if you put down a leaf of a chimera, the plant that results will not look like the mother plant?
Wow, someone could keep putting down leaf after leaf just to see what they get each time!
But I love all the blooms....i get so excited to see what color the same plant will bloom again......I also don't really care about these perfect rosettes I hear about. I wouldn't even know how to properly groom a plant...maybe I should learn but it is the day to day growing and nurturing that I love....
We are all just different in our gardening....and what makes each of us happy.....I just want a greenhouse to never come out of!!! But then, my av's wouldn't be happy in a greenhouse that i could afford (LOL)
Mutations can be and are very good things when you consider all the wonderful variety we have now in violets in both blossoms and foliage. All started with the very plain wild species. Amazing actually.
Gee. snowrose, i never even thought of such a concept.....and it is soooooo true!!!!!
Good point Snowrose! It truly is Amazing when you think about where it all began with that very first wild species .... Probably the very first one was in The Garden of Eden!
