Does anyone on here have any experience with Texas Persimmon? Are the self-fertile? How about shade and drought tolerance? Any positive or negative comments about them? I haven't been able to find too much about these trees.
Thanks!
Dennis
Texas Persimmon?
I have never grown it, but I found this link that might be of interest to you.

Josephine.
We have them on the ranch. They are definitely drought hardy. I don't know about shade tolerance as ours grow in full sun. They do not transplant well at all. The one we have growing at our house in town was purchased at Natives of Texas in Kerrville. It's small yet, so I don't know about self-fertile. They make huge shrubs on the ranch, but we have never tried to prune them into tree shape.
We have them here on the ranch, too. They are not self fertile. Male and female flowers are on separate trees. You won't be able to tell them apart until they bloom. So purchase several to make sure you have at least one of each. Most of ours are growing out in full sun. Those that are growing under the canopy of our live oaks are growing slightly sideways out toward the sun. I just love the colors of the exfoliated bark — different shades of gray. They are easier to train into multi-trunked trees than single trunked ones. The fruit is edible, but here wildlife get to them long before they get completely ripe. So I've never tasted a ripe one. Green ones are astringent.
I have a lot of tx per. here and think they're so pretty. I found 4 young ones close together and braided them...I like walking thru the property here and doing strange things like that...for future generations to wonder about! Mine also grow in mostly sun but can take some shade too.
