Monticello, GA

Has anyone got a pic of an araucanna hen of laying age. Also they may have slipped in a bronze turkey on me. One looks just like a little turkey polt.Barred wing and buff tipped tail feathers?Probably too soon to tell ,, huh?

TY,,BYH,,,the chick pic looks like 2 of mine, but the other chick Is a lot diff,,, she has different eyes, and she doesn't have the tufts below the eyes. She is a fine looking hen though!Nice and fat! Did you get some good egg production from her?I just think that one of my three ,,,maybe a turkey...they had bronze turkeys ,at the same time I got the chicks,,,about the same size,,,I dunno??? Just curious about this breed of chicken. They are soooo much more standoffish than my other chicks,,,they get all fretful when I try to socialize w/them..I am not worried ,,but I am new to this chicken scratchin'.
Sorry to hear she is not w/you anymore :(

Antrim, NH

oh ,mine was pretty friendly. I liked her a lot. But I did handle her all the time. In fat, I'm getting two new auracaunas this spring because i miss her and her festive green eggs! The beard and the tufts didn't actually come out on the hen until she was about 6+ months old, so if you don't get them right away, don't be surprised. She was a good gal who laid a lot of eggs, and laid a lot of smack down on the other gals. We called her Queen Elizabeth for a reason! LOL. She was a big, good, chicken. I think you'll like them. I'd handle them a lot and hopefully they'll get friendlier.

Do you have pix of the other chick? Murray-mcmurray has pix of chicks on their website, which might be a good resource for you. Good luck

check out pictures of chicks at www.feathersite.com. They have a whole section devoted to chick identification. Poults will have a little nob at the top of their beak near their eyes this turns into the snood when they are adults.

Thanks,,,BYH, and linda... I have no knob, but just a faint, barely noticable comb,,,I think?
Was kinda hoping ,they messed up and frikked a turkey on me. Eufaula has told me that they will ship americaunnas with the araucannas , The difference is the araucannas have the little puffy chipmunk cheeks, and the americaunnas don't !I don't really care. Just thought that she looked alot like a turkey! They seem to be getting a little more used to me. I don't handle them much,,,maybe I should ,,more? I dunno?

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Ha ha ha! Turkeybeard, I handle mine everyday! Couldnt you tell?? Shoot , just think how much fun the "chicken run" would have been the other day if my babies werent used to me!LOL!!!
Oh , Imeant to say too, that I was told about the Araucana and Americauna "Puff" thing by some one else, I dont know if it is true or not. I've never had an Americauna , just Puffy Araucanas! So the mystery bird will just have to keep us mystified until we know for sure! ( I hope its a TurkeY)!

This is some of my aracauna hens. Hope this helps.

Thanks , Riversdale. Nice looking birds,, they do kinda resemble young eagle or hawk.
Just have to wait to see what this turken looking one turns out like?

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Oh my , I know you meant to spell" Turkey looking one ", but if you have a Turken.......Well all I can say is........Remember the Old Red headed stepchild joke!!!!! LOL!!!

Robertsville, MO

Eu, LOLOLO... to funny... It looks like a Turken and it's gone wild!!!! LOLOLOLO..

Antrim, NH

TB, This is a turken chick...oh good ol' Medusa.

There are true breed Auracaunas and then there are Auracauna/americauna/Easter Egg chickens which are mutts bred for the egg laying, if I understand correctly. So, mine, I think are the mutt variety, but Riversdale's might be more of the true breed? I don't know for sure. Martha Stewart's americaunas are white.

BYH,,,Mine look similar to riversdales,,,one has greyish, silver markings. The other two are darker...The lighter one is my buddy! She will perch on my fingers,,,but when I first stick my hand in the cage,,she is the one that runs up to my hand and bumps and pecks it ,,Kinda like,,,she is gonna show me who's boss! Then she just steps on my fingers and all is well.!! Really strange birds ,these chickens.
Finally got my coop built for the reds and the australorps,,,not finished , but I moved them in anyway. I will post a couple of pics soon.

Here is Corky (on the left), she is a white aracuana. I have many other aracaunas that vary in colors, ranging from white, grey, tan, brown, to black. Great layers. Mine are all super friendly - - - but I tend to spoil them just a bit! lol
My aracaunas do indeed have the "poof" on the bottom side of their jaws. I too have heard what "E" said about the difference between the two - - - makes me wonder now. :) Good luck with them turkeybeard!

TGM, yours is not a true aracauna. True aracaunas have no tails, not do they have a "parson's nose" at the back end where tail feathers grow from. They have a smooth rounded rump. There is something about the tufts and faicial bearding and cheek tufts, but it's been a long time and I don't remember who has what.

Here's an ameraucana hen on the right. On the left is a buff orpington.

And here's another, with a more golden neck.

Araucanas have ear tufts but no beard and no rump. Ameraucanas have rumps and beards but no ear tufts, according to what I've read.

Here are a lot of nice photos of purebred Araucanas.

Here's a lot of photos of Ameraucanas.

Got ya. The breeder that I got them from called the ones without rumps "Rumpless Aracauna"????? Thanks hart for the links, both are good sources of info. Guess I had better start calling them Amercaunas, instead. :0)
Regardless, they are a very pretty breed of chicken and I really enjoy them.

I've noticed McMurray calls theirs araucanas/ameraucanas so it's no wonder we're confused. LOL

BTW, Zeppy, those are beautiful chickens. Really nice photos too. I hope my ameraucana chicks turn out as pretty.

Tucson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Whatever you call them, they lay the best eggs I've ever had. And some of the prettiest, too.

Mine were pretty standoffish, personality-wise, too, but that's fine with me- they never got mean.

Dublin, TX(Zone 8a)

I agree Eileen. Their eggs are not only pretty, but quite tasty too! :-) I have eggs that are colored anywhere from light green to a terra cotta color. Quite neat to gather!

Shenandoah Valley, VA(Zone 6b)

Mine are distant, as well; sort of independent and good foragers and flyers. But fantastic layers. This is their third summer and I've always got at least one blue egg in the box from just two hens.

Monticello, GA

Geez! I guess I should juist hope for some good layers! I've given up on who is who and what is what! I think I have a few that might lay, and offer some amusement along the way,,,not to mention the relaxation I get from them. They really are living Dinosaurs!

Monticello, GA

TY,, Zeppy ,those some pretty birds. I like the difference in the head, neck, and body feathers!
But where does the beard come in? Is it like a turkey beard,,,that grows from their chest?Do only males have the beard or what? I am just so taken with these birds! They are so much different than my RIR's, and the lorps, just the personality strikes me as strange.

Shenandoah Valley, VA(Zone 6b)

The beard is less pronounced than in the proper araucanas, and was no more visible in the rooster I had (he became soup). I'll try to get you a better pic today. I really love my two. They would be perfectly happy wandering around the lawn by themselves; the other hens like a rooster and girlfriends nearby.

Antrim, NH

My gal had quite the ear tufts and beard, and she was one of those murray-mcmurray americauna/auracauna mutts. She looked a lot like that darker one Zeppy posted (if you go to the bigger pic I posted you can really see it)

My gal was pretty friendly.
