I bought this plant last Thanksgiving and was told it came from Florida and to keep it in a pot.
Another nursery advised treating it like a
ginger and planting it in the ground. Its a pretty plant but doesn't seem very happy in the big pot. Any suggestions about its name and care? thanks.
Is this a Ginger?
It is stromanthe

Don't know what zone you are in, and don't have this plant myself-but have been checking them out for awhile. PF has some info on it's care. Does not appear to be a ginger, though.
Good luck-it's so big and pretty!
I'm in zone 9..
Pf has it listed as hardy in 9b. I have a Ctenanthe, which is in the same family, and it seems to like high indirect light and pretty moist soil. I have done very little with mine and never fed it after over a year (Prob. should). I did see some info in the bottom of the PF link from my last post on care.
Personally I'd put it in the ground to see what happens, and if you think it might be getting particularly cold, dig a piece for insurance:)
I try to grow lots of things that aren't hardy here, I just try to remember to divide a small piece just in case.
Great Idea..Tropicanna. I'll plant a little and save a little.
Its sold here as an indoor houseplant. I think if you plant houseplants in the ground you should keep them from getting too much sun.
