Question about rooting...

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

First off, congrats to all of you who received those beautiful cuttings!

I recently went into a nursery and found an EA Kentiana that was not doing so great, but it had a few peduncles on it. I asked the greenhouse manager if I could take a cutting of the Kentiana where a peduncle was, and he generously cut me a vine that had a peduncle with some buds just starting. I already have a nice sized Kentiana, so I didn't want to buy the whole plant. I've never seen a Kentiana bloom so I'm hoping the buds make it.

Anyway, I usually water root my "thin-vined" hoyas, so that's what I did with this one. The blooms have significantly grown, so I guess they're doing ok so far, and I'm still waiting for roots. Should I just leave the vine in water until it finishes flowering? Would it even bloom in water? I would hate to move it to the "mother" plant once it develops roots and then have the blooms die on me from shock.

Thanks for any advice,

Gabi

Gabi...to be totally sure you get a plant....I would cut off the pedicels and let it root. If you want to see flowers, you can leave it in the water...or a pot...and they 'may' open...but then again, they may not. Sounds like the mother plant was blooming in a 'survival' mode so the cutting was probably stressed to begin with.

I made myself a backup pot of H. davidcummingii because my mother plant began to look wilted for some reason. It hasnt died but still looks a bit wilted even though it is currently putting out new growth.

Anyway I put about 15-20 2 node cuttings into a 4" pot to get my backup plant started. One of the cuttings had a peduncle on it which I left intact and I check it at least every other day and the little buds are growing.

Thanks for your quick reply Carol. Since I already have a large Kentiana, I'm not interested in turning this cutting into a plant. I just got it so that I can add a vine with a peduncle to my Kentiana. Cheating, I know :-)

So right now I really only care about the peduncle blooming. If it doesn't, I'll stick the cutting (once it's rooted) into my Kentiana and hope the peduncle will bloom for me some other time.

I'm thinking the best chance for me of seeing these current buds open is to just keep it in water until after it has flowered, since the cutting has been through enough shock already.

Dmichael, your posting gives me hope for my little "buds"...thanks.

Gabi
