I know a bunch of you have gazilliion leaves down, and a few of you have a million seeds sown. I just sowed another 40 or so pots so I now have about 50. Even if a dozen or more sprout nothing, that still leaves me with a TON of plants.
I also have some 75-100 plants that are about a year old. Some things are doubling in size each month - like this leaf pot, which will basically quadruple in footprint when I split it up. This is getting out of control.
Now that I've joined the local society, my extras will be going on the raffle table. What are you going to do with yours?
How many houseplants make a plant addiction? Do you think 50 plants is a lot? If you have multiples of the same plant, are you counting it once or thrice? :P
What are you going to do with them all?
Beautiful baby you have there.
Mmm, I don't know how many it takes to have an addiction but I know I qualify for "insanely addicted". When I started my outside plants were over the top but AV's really threw me over the line that's for sure.
I don't even know how many Av's & gessies I have- but it fills the house up..lol
Great pic~ Great topic!
MsC
Beautiful baby !
We give them to Nursing homes, friends, Salvation Army, Childrens groups, like scouts ... friends and neighbors .
Hi Everyone,
I'm pretty new at this so my house isn't overflowing (yet) but my pots do look like that one so I'm pretty sure I should be dividing them up. I plan on sharing them with friends and family and I might give some away to my friends on freecycle.
I was talking to a new friend of mine who is a retired greenhouse owner. She said she used to collect avs but she ended up getting rid of all of them. She said they multiply like bunnies :)
I think I'm starting to see that, plus I keep ordering them off ebay, so my collection is growing by leaps and bounds. I started out with walmart noids and now I want named plants. I think I'm getting addicted but I love em.
Sue
LOL glamour..........I think we have a lot to do with the fact that they multiply like bunnies....I am gulity of that....:o)
Hi my name is Lauri and I am an AV addict....
I have rooms full, yet again.....
I sent a big box off to Cordeledawg and thought I am down to 15 favorites and a few babies included...no more putting leaves down of my NOIDS!!! I AM going to buy named AV'S either plants or leaves!!! This I swore! Well that thought is a distant memory...I am back up to wayyyyyyyyy too many and am going to be thinning the herd yet again. Hopefully I can stick to my guns and this time be brutal.....oh the pain...the little leaf looks so healthy can't toss it, I could pot it and give it away.....no, no, no, we must buy not start......... yet...LOL I need help....
Lauri
Well I have alot of AVs myself and if you gals would like to throw some of those leaves or plantlets my way please give me dmail for an address...Thanks
Hee Hee .... I think we all sound so much alike!
I blame my AV, and now other Gessie Addiction on you all! I didn't even know AV's came with variegated foliage before joining DG, and had never heard of Chirita's or Kohleria's or some of these other plants! I have always loved Plants, any Plants, as long as they don't have Thorns! I have grown House Plants for 40 years. I've had a few AV's over the years too, my Dear Mother In Law taught me to root AV leaves in water back in 1968 0r 69 and I was hooked, but never had more than one or two AV's around, mostly other kinds of generic house plants. Now, on this thread, every time someone posts a photo of something that catches my eye ( which, by the way is at least twice a day ) .... I have to write down the name and go googling to find a source! Oh ... it can get waaaaay out of hand, very quickly!
edited to say: Key ... what's the name of that Beautiful Variegated Foliage AV in your photo???!!! I'm really getting hooked on some of the variegated foliage Gessies!

Yesterday I began thinking that I had run out of space and was going to get rid of all noids, but, the sad truth is I can't!!!!! The reason I love them sooooo much is that each time they bloom, they bloom a different bloom.....it is just way too exciting...I am maybe going to try and put them someway close to windows for natural light....my windows are high so that means more tables, etc......
By the way ... nice Photo of the Day Key ... A sinningia photo posted in 2005. Lovely Plant!

Oh no!!!! another plant to love!!!
Hmm. Robin - those are good "outlets".
The photo is Fisherman's paradise I think. I'm not home so I can't check, but I believe that's right and I got the mother leaf from snowrose or nanna in November. It's currently in a 5" pot, and can I just say that I think it's huge! I rarely grow standards and when I do, they are smaller ones. The size of the mother leaf was unbelievable!
Oh yes..This wonderful Garen and the people in it is definitely what started my addiction. This can be a wonderful addiction indeed.I have too many to count at the present.LOL I am constantly passing them around to whomever shows a little interest in them.I do like to try and make sure whoever gets them really wants them as they are so precious to me so I do like to make sure they will be cared for.and I love to see how many people I can turn on to their beauty.I am sort of an AV Crusader..LOL So far alot have gone to family, friends, the ladies at church, nursing home residents really love when I bring a box up(their eyes really light up and thats the most wonderful feeling).Of course I always am willing to share with my DG friends ; ) .All the postal worker ladies in town received some along with ladies at the store downtown,People standing on the streets..well ok its not that bad that I am handing them out on the streets but..I just love to share them with whomever I can whenever I can.
Cedar ....... I'm gonna be at the corner of Main Street and Cypress Lane ... LOL
What a great suggestion ... I think sometime in the next month or two I will get a box together and take it over to the Assisted Living Home where my Dear Mother In Law resided for years! I know some of those ladies would love to get some nice plants!
Thanks for the great suggestions Y'all! It is so nice to be able to give a bit of joy! I don't know why I never thought of doing that with plants! I used to bake all the time for the elderly residents there and also plant flowers on the property with my MIL. Guess, I've just been so busy with other stuff I forgot. I sure appreciate the reminder!
Lin
You just gave me an idea....the lady who works at the hardware store loved my av so much, she has it in the window of the hardware store....I am going to take her some more with the self watering mats to make her life easier. She said that she doesn't spend any time at home, but stays at the store so much she wanted to enjoy it there. Thanks, my friends!!
Gail, what a kind thing to do. I remember those days being at work more than you were at home! I used to have the office or office cubicle with plants hanging from the rafters and sitting on top of file cabinets and on the corner of the desk, or any little table I could find! It sure made "work" much more enjoyable for me and I know your friend at the hardware store will get so much joy from your gift of AV's! It's always so nice when we can brighten the life of someone else. Sometimes "giving" brings just as much joy as "getting"!!
Lin
Lin, I will guarantee you that folks at the assisted living center will brighten up when they see you coming! They really do appreciate them so much and you are right about bringing joy to them.
Gail,Thats a wonderful idea for the gal at your hardware store.I am sure spending so much time away from home your av's would really lift her up as well.
Lin and Nancy, I think there is so much joy in giving when we are the only ones who know how much we love what we are giving away!!!!
Some very nice ideas ladies. Thank you for opening my eyes again.
Laura
I'm just starting and only have three AV's. Anyone want to help my addiction along with your extras? ;~) Hmmm, I have other plants that might be enjoyed at assisted living and don't take a lot of care. I have a sanseveria in dire need of thinning. Some Heartleaf Philodendron, some....
That would be a lot of fun and very rewarding taking plants in to the elderly folks.
Lana
