Bud is HUGE...

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

Well at least I THINK it is... I have only seen the small buds that froze before they opened and the Butterfly I pulled out of the green house and the calyx had already split. Now I have buds on about 6 of my brugs, two of the brugs the blooms have split the calyx but this one is so fat and it doesn't look like it is splitting anywhere. Do they always open ok? Also, if a bud looks all pitted but it is nice and green, does this mean something is wrong with it? This is on one of the brugs that had leaf problems... maybe mites???? This is not the fat bud in the question above.

Hellooooo????

Hi, I have never had a bud that didn't eventually split the calyx, but I think I remember hearing of people helping them along. I am sure someone with more experience than me will come along and answer your question. It has been a quiet day on all the forums.

Congratulations on your buds. I have several that are in bud right now, and I did quite a bit of pollinating a couple weeks ago, only to have the brand new forming seed pods blown off by the wind. It sure can be frustrating dealing with these plants at times.

Patricia,
I thought I had heard that too, but I haven't the slightest idea how to go about it... We had heard we could expect some hail today and I was afraid it would do the job for me! Or worse, knock the bud off!
I am depending on the blooms to help identify some of my brugs that lost their tags in the bubbler. Knowing what I had to begin with should enable me to ID them pretty easily. I have only had one bloom so far and it was very beautiful

I know what you mean! DH had to get mine in & out of the greenhouse a couple of times! And I have over 50 now... I am hoping to get some planted out and some repotted soon.

If you have bad weather coming, I would wait and see if it does it on it's own. How long has that bud been there? If I decided to open the catlyx, I would very carefully make a cut just on that outer layer that . Being very careful not to cut into the bud itself. I know that we just had heavy winds about 45 miles per hour all day yesterday. I lost most of my brand new little seed pods that were forming, but there is one that still has the dried catlyx covering the pod and that one made it through those heavy winds.

Ok, looks like I won't need to perform surgery! It is starting to split and I can see the flower starting to peek out. Can't wait to see what it is!!!

This is a very exciting time for me!!! besides this one I have several more unknowns that have one or more buds on them and Golden Lady and another unknown are opening now! One unknown has six buds on it. Butterfly has 3. Butterfly has bloomed once and it is my one and only bloom I have seen in person! And I broke it off taking pictures. :(
I am almost certain that one of the ones about to bloom is Inca Sun...

I share your excitement. I have two or three seedlings that I grew out last year that didn't bloom that are in bud. Unfortunately we are really having cold nights right now, so it is taking them forever to open up.
