Is the Night-Blooming Jessamine an herb? If not, can you direct me to where I can ask this question? bought my Night-Blooming Jessamine last summer. It was a beautiful bush, although it didn't bloom last year. After the cold freeze we had in Winter, most of the branches died. Now new branches are coming out from the sides. The problem is the branches that weren't killed by the frosts. It makes the plant look lopsided with three long branches and several newer and shorter branches. Is it all right to trim it now? If I cut the old branches to the same length, will they grow back?
Thanks,
Chuck
Night Blooming Jessamine
Mr Bernard ~ I don't know the answer to this one. You might try for assistance in Tropicals or Perennials? Perhaps they are knowlegable about this beautiful plant.
Chuck,
It's considered a poisonous plant. It seems to be just for looks and fragrance, and not an herb.
I bought some once, and as soon as I found out how poisonous it was, I took it back so my dogs didn't get ahold of it.

Hi CBernard
I see this is quite an old post ... I have some of these shrubs and did not know they were poisonous. Anyway, I would not hesitate to prune back the longer branches to shape the shrub. It won't mind a bit. It wil encourage growth from below your cut.
Mine get terrible greenfly and wooly aphid - what a pain. But they more than makes up for it later in the year with that heady scent. WOW!!!

hi Chuck, it definitely is not an herb. i used to have this in my house in Los Angeles. i keep it trimmed all the time. i only allowed outgoing branches, all branches inward are all trimmed off to allow; waves of blooms in succession, allow the plant to have an airy space to avoid bugs 'invitation' so to speak. keeping them trimmed after each bloom to avoid mess of seeds on the ground. so far, i never had any problem with this plant.
Lizzy, if u keep it trimmed like mentioned above, u should never have any bug problems. spray heavily with water to wash off aphids. hth

I pruned back three branches on the plant. The plant responded well and I cut five cuttings on the branches I pruned off. I now have five more Night-Blooming Jessamine. They are not quite ready for planting but they should be by August. I have never had very good luck with cuttings but I have been using Dip-n-Gro and it seems to help.
Thanks,
Chuck
