The leaves on my brugs developed brown, dead spots on them. As the dead spots fell through it left the leaves looking like lace. They are on my porch partially protected from direct sun, though they do get the afternoon sun. I water them every other day for now. I do not see any insects on them. The leaves are dropping off now. Can anyone suggest any ideas on this?
problem w/leaf
Were they on the porch when we got down into the low 30s for 2 days last week? Other than freeze damage, I can't think what it might be. My Brugs have never had that symptom. Maybe someone else will have the answer.
Could be mites , bird droppings and or fert [ food ] splashed on leaves .
The underside of leaves have little openings where plant breathes and mites go in them and eat their way thru . If the plant is weak , it will drop bad leaves to protect itself . If it's healthy it gets good signals from rest of leaves and ignores bad signals until there are too many .
Someone else will probably explain it better .
They were on the porch when we had the most recent cold snap (not the ice ones back in Jan.) We got some sleet on the most recent days, but again these brugs were under the protection of the porch, although at the railing.
Can you post a picture? It would help to see your plant's symptoms.. Have they always been on the porch? Or how long? Is it just the bottom, older leaves? Kinda sounds like sunburn. Mine did that a couple of weeks after they were moved outside... it was like a delayed reaction, and only on a few of the bottom leaves, not the whole plant.
I was thinking sunburn also, but they'd been there for 4 - 5 weeks. I don't have a digital camera. I may get one this month and will send if I do. The plants were planted about the 2nd week of March. They were just slips when I got them and are now about 3 ft. (the tallest one is). I will have to look when I get home as to whether it's all of them or just the larger ones. The burned spots appeared after the sleet storm. Maybe too fast a transition from cold to hot???
AuntAnne,
Did you get any hail. Here, we got repeated warnings of pea-sized hail. That could also have done that type of damage.
Perhaps Betty, we did get sleet here as well. I will look again at them when I get home to see if it is affecting the new leaves as well.
Ok, I think the sleet is the problem. I looked at them more closely this morning. It seems to have affected only the outer half of them. These would be the ones that the sleet would have gotten to. Thank you for all your input. Anne
You're welcome.
