Brown spots

Baton Rouge, LA

I have seeds that have just sprouted with brown spots appearing on some. Any ideas? What should I do?

The brown spots are on the seedlings? Is it on the cotyledon? The cotyledon will eventually turn brown and fall off after the true leaves have sprouted. This is normal. Is this what you meant? Can you post a pic?

No pics but it is on the first set of green leaves.

Sorry, by first set, do you mean these big fat ones (cotyledons) in the picture or the first set of true leaves (narrow ones on the inside). If it is on the first set of true leaves, then it could be that the seedlings are dampening off -- i.e., getting too much water. Try giving more heat and more light and make sure drainage is good.

Add some air movement as well with a fan.

Clare it is likke the one at 7 o'clock. The brown spot is only on one of ten. Other than the brown spot the little plant looks healthy. I had then in a domed seed starter to keep warm and humid. I have them inside today because of chilly weather and have removed the top and am moving the air w/ a fan. By the way I am using cubes to start the seeds.

Well, I don't think the cubes hold that much water if they are the ones that I am thinking of. It's hard to say. It could be too much water or too little water or neither problem. The cotyledon is just there to provide nourishment, I think, until the first true leaves arrive so they will all eventually become spent and fall off, and that is normal. I don't think it is anything to be concerned about, but it is hard to tell what is happening without a picture to look at.

I am thinking they got burned. I had them out in the sun with a dome over them. I use Rapid Rooter cubes which I really like.

Yes, the sun with the plastic dome still on would certainly do that. Those cubes are supposed to be great so I've heard.

also water spots will magnify the sun as a magnifying glass causing burns.
