Hi everybody!
I would like to know which unusual tropicals you are growing in the rest of Canada.
Are they thriving for you? How fast do they grow? Are they constant bloomers? Do you grow them outdoors in summer etc.
This helpful information could help us to see clearly before buying compulsively LOL!
For instance, I really would like to get hold of some Iochromas, Juanulloa aurantiaca, Petrea aborea, Bouvardia ternifolia but I am unsure if they are worth the buy.
Here in zone 5, I had succes so far with:
Lophospermum
Bauhinia variegata
Calliandra emarginata
Duranta repens
Justicia brandegeana
Nerium oleander
Pachystachys lutea
Punica granatum Nana
All of them were strong growers but Duranta was not very floriferous; it was worth the wait though.
Thriving tropicals up North?
I planted a Punica granatum 'Wonderful' that I propagated from cutting on a boulevard planting and it's come through the past 3 years winters without a scratch. I have a clump of Musa basjoo bananas on the side of the house, Araucaria araucana that I started from seed in the front yard. There's a Nerium near me that's come through atleast a decade of winters that I'm going to get cuttings of this year - pink/peach blooms. I'm surprised my Melianthus major came through the winter from the root.
I wish I lived in BC...
4 months of gloomy, heavy rains and the cost of living here might change your mind.
Hear, hear growin - although coming from Scotland I'm kind of used to that rain - except we call it "scotch mist" !
Mind you it is lovely outside today, I just came in to have a cup of tea and take it outside and watch everything grow !

Growin, You could try our snow LOL!
I've had good success with passion flowers, P cerulea, P mollissima, P edulis and P incarnata. All grow from seed and very vigorious in average home conditions. I haven't had one long enough yet to see if they flower though, I wouldn't be surprised if they did though.
