Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Hi I just received this plant and I am having a hard time finding information on growing it. Ia m not sure if I am even posting this in the right forum. If anyone has any information to share I would appreciate it.

marie, any chance of you posting a photo of your plant? Would love to see it.

definitely the right forum :)

There's a website dedicated to sinningias that may have info.... http://home.earthlink.net/~sinnvenner/sinns.htm

I just received it in the mail do you want to see a picture of it like that? I think I may have typed in a wrong number when placing my plant order( cannot figure out why I would have ordered this) but since I have it now I feel the need to keep it alive. I am thinking it is not something to have growing in the ground here in the desert.

This is not the best picture but here it is.

very cool....might have been an error, but a good one :))

Marie: Very nice plant .... where did you order it from? I don't know if it would survive in the desert conditions. I think it needs humidity. I have lots of humidity here in Florida if it needs a new home! :)

I like it so much. I doubt if I would plant it in the ground in a desert environment, at least not right away until I got to know the plant better. Pot it nicely and see where it is happiest. It looks to me that you could take cuttings of your sinningia macrostachya and root them easily also. I bet hummingbirds would be drawn to the orange tubular flowers.

You also have lots of plants I would love to have. I just got a greenhouse that will have lots of humidity soon. I guess I will just have to push to get it set up sooner than later!!

I just googled this plant and one site says if you like cacti and succulents you'll love this plant, so maybe it would do well in desert like conditions!

This reminds me - this is the kind of plant I was going to suggest to Starfly because it should take the heat in Florida and will also survive down to about 30F.

There ya go .... perfect to put in your greenhouse!

I have to figure out what kind of medium it needs. I will leave it on a shaded porch until I get my GH finished. I guess my mistake caused me to look at a new forum which is good. But I have no idea what I was meaning to order. This seems a little more difficult than I would want.

Thanks Keyring! I was thinking of it for an indoor plant, but I might just have to try one in the ground outside! I am quickly running out of space for indoor plants ... house is becoming a jungle!

Oh and I got it at Yucca Do. ( Sorry got ahead of myself in typing and forgot to answer this question)

Check out the sinningia and friends website I posted above - it show how it grows. Also see http://mpeixoto.sites.uol.com.br/gesneriads/sinningia/macrostachya.html for more tips. The species comes from Brazil. It has a tuber that serves well as a water storage organ. I grow some of my sinningias on the same watering schedule as some cactus - yes, the cacti are small ones under a compact fluorescent, but it gives you some idea.

Wow I like the degree of difficulty "easy" that is right up my alley. Maybe it needs more of a cactus growng medium.

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

My guess would be cactus medium but go easy on the acidity. And if you make it a tad more water retentive, you might really be able to put it on the same watering schedule.

Yucca Do has all this fun stuff but I don't have the space to grow them!

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Yes I love that place. I wish I could just rent a U-haul and rive over there and fill it up!!

:) Marie: I was googling and found Yucca Do ... Lots of Nice Plants ... I've bookmarked that site!

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

I order from them alot. :o)

(Zone 1)

I think I was looking at a different one somewhere that said it needed humidity, not the macrostachya ....

(Zone 1)

That site Keyring linked us to shows a really nice plant ... I'm really itching to try one of these now! I am gonna be needing a DG Anonymous Group before long! Or maybe I should say PA - Plants Anonymous! I am such a Plantaholic, I just can't seem to stop myself!

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Well I am glad of that. My greenhouse was supposed to be for Hoyas (a uhmmm new addiction I only have 3 right now but I think I have caught the bug) and some tropicals that I have been wanting but need humidity!!
