None of my flower beds have been cleaned out yet. I have some flowers that I planted last spring that I thought were Bouncing Bet or Soapwort. Now they are in bloom for the first time and I'm not sure what they are. They look a little like tall phlox.
What is this flower? Whatever it is had grown years ago in my children's great grandmother's yard. Since my dd and family live in there now she gave me some of these plants.
Is This Phlox?
What you have is dianthus...sometimes known as "pinks" regardless of color or sweet william.
Not a horticulturist so don't know proper names. Go to DG Plantfiles and search "dianthus".
I have these plants in the picture for the last 3 summers and they are evergreen and just keep going and going and going.....
LouC is right, you have Dianthus, but it must be a different variety than hers, because hers is low and yours is tall and grows in a large cluster like Phlox does.
It is beautiful and I bet it smells great too. Congratulations!!
Josephine.
I found this one that looks a lot like yours in form.

Thank you for your help, Jo. I got half the answer right. I always deadhead mine and I did not know they would reseed or maybe the kind I have doesn't reseed. Purchased them at HD and they are not good with putting much information on the tags. I will do further research on just what variety I have. Just know they were always included in my grandmother's garden along with petunias and verbena and zinnia. All from seed because at that time nurseries with plants did not exist. I don't recall her having so much trouble with bugs and disease either. But then my memory is failing.

They sure are beautiful, and they smell so good!!
Thanks so much Frostweed and Lou for that link and helping me identify them. When I first saw them I thought they were dianthus but then the height and mound of blooms took my by surprise. I have even more to take out of a pot and put in the garden. ;) I hope they continue to reseed. They do smell nice.
