Night blooming cereus cuttings.....

North Augusta, ON

I got 3 cuttings the other day ( $1 each ).....I have read conflicting reports as to how to root them The only thing the web agrees on is letting them dry off a bit like a cactus, which I kinda figured anyway. The conflicting thing is the soil. Some say sand, some say light stuff like AV's, etc.
What would be the best way??? oh...I can't find orchid bark up here soooooo......
Thanks,
Lee Anne

Any well-draining mix will work well:-)

Plant the bottom inch or so. Water sparingly until you see growth.

when my girlfriend gave me starts they were big long straps...I buried each end in soil of the real long ones...could've I cut them into segment, callused them and then planted to get more starts? or do they have to be where you twist a segment off? Thank you, Deb

Deb, I would never twist a segment off. Always make a nice clean cut with a clean pair of cutters. Yes, you can root a whole leaf, or you can cut a leaf into segments to make many starts as long as there are some nodes above the soil line. Here is an example of how I started some of mine.
