I ordered two clematis from Silver Star Vinery yesterday. Debbie gave me a lot of help choosing the right ones - I contacted her after reading the references on DG. I chose Alba Luxurians - and Etoile Rose to grow with my Lady Banks rose.
Would be interested to hear if anyone has grown Alba Luxurians in a container - I haven't decided where to put it yet and that might be an option.
These flowers are novelties in our landscape - we grow 90% California natives. We do have a Betty Corning - not a good choice as it turned out - but other than that no experience with clematis. I just think they will make nice accents to some of our more wild plantings.

Has anyone grown Alba Luxurians and Etoile Rose?
Kaperc, I just got Alba Luxurians from Debbie. Isn't she great? I read that it can be grown in a large container. I just planted it a week ago and it's already putting on new foliage. I planted mine so it will get some shade. I think that is supposed to enhance the green coloring. Maybe someone with more experience can tell us more about it. I also just ordered Alionushka and Betty Corning from Debbie. Can't wait!
Rosethyme (split interests, eh? lol),
I read that about the Alba, too. That's why I thought I might put it in a pot, so I can position it more precisely - I really like that green!
The Betty Corning is lovely, but we should have chosen something with larger leaves for the location - it looks naked, poor thing, growing against a wall next to our fountain. Just went and looked - Alionushka is very pretty.
We've got a lot to look forward to!
I started to get Etoile Rose...so pretty. It's so hard to decide when you want so many. :) I really like the one Debbie has called Palette and also Minuet.
Do you have the yellow Lady Banks rose? I think a purple Clematis would be beautiful growing through it.
Yes, purple and yellow do play well together, don't they? We have the yellow Lady Banks (double) and the white (single). I have planted a native clematis with the yellow. It's not a showy flower, but I wanted to try it. The bloom of the rose is very early here (it was budding when our January freeze hit) and doesn't last very long.
Debbie put me in touch with someone who grows not far from me, and she helped me pick varieties that might be successful here.
I love the powdery yellow color of Lady Banks. I also have the white single, Lady Banks Normalis. I'm thinking a dark red Clematis might be pretty with it.
I have an etoile rose and I love it but it is VERY susceptible to powdery mildew. Messenger treatments make it OK but before Messenger I used to have to treat it for mildew from late August on. It might be OK for you. Mildew is just very common here.
Oops, wasn't aware of that, doss. My Lady Banks Lutea had mildew last year. Can't remember what I sprayed on it - something organic and innocuous. I need to be careful because it is against the screen of our screened room and our parrots are inside.
rosethyme, I was looking for a red clematis, but couldn't find the right shade in the right group. I really like that Ember that Debbie is going to have in the fall - now if only I could find a place for it. lol
I know, she has a lot that I want..especially Minuet and Palette. I've spent way too much already but I wonder if she will have a sale later on?
What shade of red are you wanting? I have a red one called Niobe...a deep dark burgundy red. It looks stunning with light pink roses.
I looked at Niobe, but it wasn't my cup of tea. Did you see Ember? It's difficult to describe what red looks good and what doesn't. And looking at things on the computer is very 'iffy.' I haven't been able to get a picture showing the yellow of the Lady Banks, either. When Betty Corning bloomed, I was surprised at the color after the description I read. I guess a lot depends on where it's planted, too.
Ember is beautiful but it is herbacious so it won't climb without being tied up. That's Ok as long as you're aware of it. I do tie up my Durandii.
Ember looks like a true red one. So many red plants are really dark pink. She also has one called Brocade that looks red.
Doss, I'm thinking of getting Durandii. It's such a pretty dark purple and seems to be a real classic.
Durandii is beautiful. It's been very slow to get established. It's more of a true blue. I only have 20 kinds of clematis but the dark purple I have that takes my breath away is Negritianka and it's much faster to establish. I've found that all of my photos of Durandii turn out purple even though it's blue. Don't know why. The blue flowers with the yellow centers are really showy though.
Doss, blue is even better! It would be beautiful with one of my yellow roses. Where can I order Negritianka?
I'm pretty sure that Silver Star Vinery, Chalk Hill Nursery and Joy Creek Nursery will have it. If you order from Joy Creek be sure to call or email them ahead of time to confirm that they have one. Sometimes it's listed in the inventory and they are gone.
Thanks, Doss. I think I will get Durandii as it is more blue..love that! Brushwood has it and I'm also getting Roko Kolla plus one more... can't decide what though.
Enjoy!!
Thanks, Doss. I ordered Roko Kolla, Durandii, and a beautiful purple, Gipsy Queen. I read that Gipsy Queen is said to be an old tried and true variety.
All really beautiful.
Received my plants today. Wow, now I know what everyone means about Debbie's plants. EXcellent! If I can't grow these, I'm in serious trouble. Thanks to those who recommended her - I am now on that list.
Glad you liked!!..Enjoy and don't forget to share pics when they bloom..which ones did you eventually decide to get?...Jeanne
Alba Luxurians and Etoile Rose
Funny - I knew they were arriving today, so I had the hole and pot ready. When I unwrapped the first one, I had to go dig some more because it wasn't roomy enough! How's that for a testimony to product quality? LOL
I have two Etoile Rose and they are wonderfully pretty! IOne of them is growing into a Cecile Brunner and it is lovely there. The other one was growing with a white Noisette rose, Moulton..but the rose was moved and now the Clem doesn't have a partner! It looke bereft, poor thing. I am going to move it too, in the fall...
Do most clematis accept moving OK? I put my Alba Luxurians in a pot in case it gets too much sun where it is now - I want those green edges if possible.
I don't know...if it were a rose....
