Lilies of the Valley - will they grow in Texas?

Grand Prairie, TX

Have any of you had success with Lilies of the Valley? My mom had them planted all along the side of our house when I was little - up in South Dakota. I LOVE them so much - but the highest zone listed is 7. I live in Dallas - Fort Worth area - which I have sometimes seen listed as 7, but usually as 8. I would love to grow them.

Mary, if you love them go for it, what is the worst that could happen?
Besides you are already breaking the mold with your lilacs, so be a trend setter.

Almost planted some last year. Was developing a very shady area. I think they'll do fine in N. Texas as long as they are planting in a ton of shade (>60% shade). The plant is beautiful and vigorous. I was told to "make sure I liked it", before planting it.

I found lily of the valley at Wmart in the bulb section.

I have bought LOV from walmart/HD for the past two years and planted in a very shady area. For the first time this year I have ONE plant flowering. Don't know if they will come back, but I won't spend any more money on them. If they come back, fine; if they don't, I have at least 3 plants in my holding area that would llove that real estate.

Mary, I also think they will do fine in N. Texas. This year lowes had the pinks for $4 for a pack of two. I got some of those, but no action yet. This is mid April, I'm not holding my breath.

I didn't even know Lowe's sold plants. There is a Home Depot close to us, and I am frequently wandering through their garden section - picking up soil conditioner, humus, bricks, etc.... not to mention those plants that find their way into my cart.

oh yes, lowe's sells plants. In fact, I tend to favor Lowe's over HD just a bit. My local Lowe's is really good about putting plants on sale fast whereas my HD seems to wait until they are almost dead.
