Lantana troubles

Longview, TX(Zone 8a)

I have 2 whiskey barrels - one with the lavendar lantana and one with the white. They performed great all summer and I overwintered them in the greenhouse where they did great. They have been outside for 2 weeks now and the foliage is turning brown with little bleached looking spots from the center of the plant on out. I've tried adusting the water and that hasn't helped. Could it be getting used to the sun again and burning a little or is it some kind of fungus. Any ideas? I can take a picture if that would be more helpful. Thanks all!

Taking a close up picture would help. It could be the flea beetles, there are a lot of them out there right now, or it could be the sudden change in temperature.
In any event, you can always cut it back some and the should do fine.

Could it be red spider mites? Do you have a magnifying glass?

Yes I do. I'll go out and look tomorrow since it's supposed to warm up again. I'll also take a pic.

Okay, here is a picture. Now ALL my lantana looks this way. The leaves are all turning from green to purple. The only thing all 3 containers have in common is that they were overwintered in the greenhouse. Could they be getting sunburned? I can't imagine what's going on. They're all different hybrids but having the same issue. HELP!!

Do not worry Greenie, my purple lantana is in a bed all winter. The leaves turn this color every fall, perhaps shorter days or frost. They are sturdy and will withstand freezes, even coming back from the roots some years. I think you will find it will shed these older leaves and put on new growth before long. Hope you can see the same in this photo. I took it around the end of October '06.

They look like they are sunburned a little, but I agree they are just shedding old leaves,
I think they will be fine.

Odd. In the heat of summer ( late afternoon shade ) mine don't turn this color. They do it in late fall. Kind of pretty ~ I think.

I had this on all my lantana last year. The leaves turn "crispy" and darken then thin and crumble off. I was told it was Lantana Lacebug. Supposedly, some varities are more resistant to it than others. I've about given up on it. I pulled some of them out and threw them away. I have two left and if they do the same this year, they're gone.

There is a critter called the Lantana Lacebug that attacks lantana in our area. I almost got rid of all my lantana because of this bug. I finally tried Bayer Tree and Shrub and put one application in spring on it when the plants are putting on their spurt of new growth. I haven't had them so far since I've been using it. Someone on DG told me about the Bayer, I think it was CJ from the Woodlands, but I may have that wrong. There is supposedly a new gold lantana that is not as susceptible to the lacebug, but I don't want a yellow lantana, so I fight the bugs on the pink one. Here's a link to information on the Lantana Lacebug.

I must have those lace bugs too. Last year I had terrible trouble with my lantanas. I finally cut them all back. They are beautiful this year but I noticed just today that a few of the branches are dead so I know the bugs are at it again.

Thanks for the Bayer tip. I'm going to get some and hopefully it will do the trick. I hate to go through another year with this problem. With all the rain we've had my lantanas are more beautiful this year than they've been in a very long time.

I have lots of lantana (bc the deer here don't eat them!) and have no probs with them, BUT would love to know the name of the purple-leafed one! Anyone?

Connie, i think the purple leaves were that way because of some stress.

My lantana leaves were purple after I took them out of the greenhouse and they were getting sun for the first time. A lot of the old died off but now they're going crazy. Purple leaves were stressed - they are now green again!

Greenie I'm glad to hear of good recovery of your lantanas. I've got to spray two of mine. Something is hindering them. They are so pretty right now I would hate to see them start looking bad.
